Taxicab confessions of Cuba

We caught a cab in Key West and heard the life story of the driver, who had come to the States with his family when he was five,  in 1960, from Castro's Cuba.

I asked if he'd ever been back.  He paused and mentioned that one time, during the Mariel Boatlift in 1980, when over 100,000 Cubans came to the US. He took his boat and brought two passengers, his grandmother and grandfather.

We listened enthralled as he described the passage, and told us how much be loved the US and how grateful he was for freedom.  I hated to leave the cab but we had to part,  One day I said, letting the sentence hang--he knew what I meant.
