Points for Gift Cards

Can we buy Marriott gift cards with Points.  I have searched the site but have not been able to find anywhere to do this.  I seem to remember somebody discussing using gift cards as the way to use points and stay at hotels using the GC to keep up the number of nights per year.  Is this possible?

Thanks

There has been a lot of discussion regarding using points to buy Marriott Gift cheques, an elite only deal. You can also purchase gift cards with points.......

For 135,000 points you can get $1000 in Marriott gift cheques for use at Marriott. To access this area go to your marriott.com homepage and go to the 'Marriott Rewards' banner up the top after you sign in. In the dropdown menu, click on 'Use Marriott Rewards Points'. In the page that comes up, scroll down the page and click on 'Platinum Rewards' down on the right hand side of the page. You will be directed to the gift cheque deals where the 135,000 point elite deal is on the bottom.

You can also buy Marriott gift cards with your points. Go here:   https://www.skymall.com/mr/homepage.htm?source=K8&partner=25G

Gift cards are in the menu on the left of the page. The deal for $1000 on a gift card is 190,000 points there. Not as good a deal.

    Hope this helps.

Sorry I missed the question of keeping up nights with usage of points. The advantage works like this....

When you stay at a Marriott property on points you get no credit towards an elite night because it is a free stay paid for with a direct reduction of points from your account.

A gift card or cheque bought with points turns the points into cash. Just book a night at the best rate available as you normally would and pay for it with the gift card or cheques when you check out. It is a paid stay so it qualifies for elite night credit.

You need to do the math to make sure the GC is at least in the ball park. Sometimes the $1000 will be eaten up in 3-4 nights. You may be able to get quite a few 5 night stays for the same number (135,000) of points, or less.

Very true. We all have to pick and choose where we use a GC or Cheque to insure that we got value that was better than just using the points.
