Many MRI members have alluded to point value comparisons between Marriott and Hilton. So, now the question is what are points worth when cashing in on hotel rooms? Part 1 is found here for gift cards and merchandise: Marriott vs Hilton Point Value
The below analysis makes the following assumptions:
RESULTS: It takes 2.64 Hilton points to equate to a Marriott point. 173.03 Hilton points buys $1 of Hilton rooms whereas 65.54 Marriott points buys $1 of Marriott rooms.
Note on rank: in the first line, a -3 appears as Rank before the highest rated Marriott property; this means that three Hilton properties ranked higher than the best Marriott, yielding a corresponding 3 in the Rank column by the Hilton property. In other words, Tripadvisor ranks three Hilton properties ahead of the best Marriott property subject to the conditions specified, above.
Wow..this is a big difference..I guess that says I should stop charging on my Hilton American Express credit card and use my Marriott Signature Visa Card, because the points I get from Marriott are worth more than twice as much as I get from Hilton..Is that correct Pingreeman?
ca - the assumptions in all these analysis were for the "die-hard" loyalist who attempts to maximize their points in any way they can. Thus, the Hilton AMEX (free card) earns 6 points per Hilton $ and the premium AMEX ($75 fee) earns 12 points/$, so the assumptions ran in this post would have the person using the $75 AMEX (see Compare the Most Popular American Express Credit Cards ) . Likewise, I have the MR-Premier ($85 fee) and earn 5 points per Marriott $ (see Travel Rewards Credit Cards | Marriott Credit Card ), an assumption also used in this analysis.
