What is your biggest pet peeve while traveling?

So I am interested in everyones biggest pet peeve while traveling.

Yesterday while flying I got into a disagreement with the "lady" next to me in regards to turning off her cellphone.   In my opinion if you are not flying on your corporate jet, you should abide by the rules of the plane and turn off your cellphone when told to do so by the flight attendants.   She continued to have her phone on, txt and read the internet during the taxing to take off.   I simply told her I appreciated her to turn it off since she really can't be that important that she needed to have her phone on, she came back with the phrase of who gave me the right to police the plane.

Well since I was flying the day of Sept. 11th, I feel as though any passenger has the right to police the plane from people that simply don't follow the rules and think that they do not apply to them.

So that goes to my question?

My pet peeve is when staying at Marriott Hotels, that I feel very disappointed many times with the recognition and lack thereof, of my elite status. This seems to have increased recently and I am beginning to feel like I have been let down after being so loyal for so many years.

My pet peeve when flying is the passenger who tries to carry-on everything except the kitchen sink.

Guests who repeatedly slam their room door is my pet peeve when staying at a hotel.

A small pet peeve is saved for the folks who disregard protocol and stuff TWO items in the overhead bins. It's announced and ignored flight after flight. This boorish, selfish, me first and only behavior always leaves someone to check a bag.

    Small but irritating.

How about the people who act like the are having their "Last meal", in the CL or at FF's and RI in the morning!  It makes me sick to see how much some of these people eat.  I now try to enjoy myself by getting some items back to my room and enjoying the "Peace" of a quiet room.  That is one advantage you have while staying at Marriott over Hilton.  In Europe Hilton will not let you take items from their CL to your room.

Columbussing, you were in the right to do this.  We all need rules and we should follow those rules if for no other reason than this is common courtesy as well as a safety issue.

As for pet peeves, I think it is the process of tailgating into the Concierge Lounge in large Marriotts. where people wait at the locked door and then enter as if they are with the person ahead of them.  This is seldom challenged and often happens.  It is these folks who then seem more demanding of the workers in the Lounge, asking for additional things, wanting another drink without paying, etc.

what is the safety issue????  I have several pilot friends that swear there is NOTHING wrong with cell useage on planes.  would anyone care to guess how many cell phones are left on during any given flight?  people just leave the phone on in their handbag or whatever.  If it were a problem, why would all of the airlines be considering cell phone use throughout the flights going forward?  I would not appreciate someone next to me on a phone conversation, but I have no problem with someone texting.  just my opinion.

Wow shoeman, how can you be so sure?  Are you a trained engineer or a certified radiation specialist? I am not, and assume (always dangerous) you aren't either.  I am glad that I won't be flying your airline.

I think it's more a function of people being alert and attentive during the taxi and take off than the technical side.  The fact is the rules are there for a reason, if someone is breaking them then they should be corrected.  If in this case the lady was in error she should have just turned her phone off. Instead she mouthed off, which from this side of the coin makes me think she thought she was above the rules. The rules are clearly published on the FAA site and by entering a public plane you agree to them.  I have often mentioned to people sitting beside me that it was time to turn it off as well....usually because I don't want to hear their conversations ;).

I guess from my point of view, the rules are the rules. If you buy the ticket and get on the plane or roller coaster or ferry or subway, etc you inherently have agreed to the rules of the governing body. If you break them you should be reprimanded or punished if warranted.  No exceptions because the one time it might not be some surly lady who can't wait to txt her BFF about her latest drama, it could be some terrrorist detonating the bomb he planted in the terminal.

My biggest pet peeve is the idiots that pace around the gate at the airport talking on their Bluetooth headsets. More directly the ones that do it and are speaking loud enough that the phone connection is not necessary ;) a string and two cans would work.  you know the ones, they walk around at 530am shouting into the air so everyone can hear their dribble but they think they are sooooo important.

The lack of proper recognition at the hotel or rental counter is also a bad rub, but usually one I can effect change on, where the loud mouths I cannot.

I did the cell phone thing, too reminding the person in the seat next to me to turn it off. I got a "who are you to tell me?" (but more politely expressed on MRI) reply, so I said back, "I'm too young to die if your cell phone corrupts navigation. I have wife and kids. Whose going to feed them if your stupid cell call crashes the plane and I'm killed?"

Cell phone was shut off within seconds.

I've seen people do that and I've gotten in their face about it, too. When I was United-1K and boarded first (it's been 2 years), I would actually watch for these folks and then when a person coming on board in group 3 or 4 had no room to put their bag, I would say, "Hey - that guy/gal has her laptop in the way - ask hum/her to put it under his/her seat and you'll have room for your bag."

My biggest pet peeve is when an airline KNOWS a delay cannot be avoided and falsifies the delay or waits until 5 minutes before the assumed boarding time to announce the delay. The most blatant example is when I knew the equipment we were waiting to board was coming in from Denver (to Chicago) or at LEAST 2 hours of flight time gate-to-gate and it had yet to take off from Denver. What does the airline announce? "We will be delayed by another 20 minutes!" Why can't they simply be honest and say "at least another two hours delay?" Heck, with this level of honesty, the airport bars would pick up a LOT more business, me included!
