Would anyone recommend exchanging US$ for local Hungarian currency? We fly into Budapest and begin our cruise there. We will be in Budapest for two days and from what I have read so far they prefer local currency. Thank you.
Yes, I would withdraw a minimal amount at the airport ATM upon arrival... for 2 days, you shouldn't need much cash. I'd use my Capital One credit card for all other purchases, meals, hotels, etc. as it doesn't carry a foreign transaction fee as most credit cards do. If I was staying at the Marriott in Budapest, I'd probably use my MR credit card to pay for that stay... more points.
Wait till you are there at most if you want to get $50 dollars to get from airport to hotel (but there is an exchange at airport). Once in Budapest go to the vatci (local area with restaurants) there are several exchanges that post rates and are better deals than hotel or anywhere else. But you will want to use cash to exchange. Don't use Marriott! The service fees make it a bad deal. Also the surcharge on your Marriott visa make it about even to the points you earn.
