It is also based on availability of an upgrade. Many properties often have lots of high end members on any given night, perhaps available upgrades were already gone? Did you confirm if they had anything available even at a price? For what its worth, even as a Plat. Premier member with 150nights+ a year, I do not get upgraded very often, especially at lower category properties like a courtyard, Townplace, etc
Yes, First the desk clerk said upgrade rooms were all sold out. So I used my Iphone to go on line and book the higher category room right in front of him at the desk. Then he told me that his hotel doesn't upgrade. Basically he first lied to my face. And yes terms say suites excluded at Ritz NOT that they are excluded at Courtyard. By making the exception of Ritz specifically doesn't that mean that all others ARE suppose to be upgraded????

The properties are supposed to give you the best available room - excluding suites. "BEST" can be defined in many ways: closest to the concierge; at resorts, a 6th floor room versus a 2nd floor room; etc. As a PP with annual nights of ~200, I have had luck with suites (on occasion) but never a guarantee. In speaking with property managers, suites are only available for upgrade when ALL nights of my stay have no one paying cash during that week. In addition, because I usually stay 4 or 5 nights, property managers actually prefer splitting the suite's available nights among several PP or P members who have single-night stays - thus, allowing more individual premier members a chance at a suite rather than just one member (me).
HMMMMMM! Actually "Suites not included" Was NOT part of the verbiage until VERY recently. The terms and conditions only excluded suites at Ritz, TownePlace, and Residence inn.... UNTIL JUST DAYS AGO!!! NOW they lead with "Suites not included"....IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!! Marriott finally realized that they have been pulling a bate and switch between what the elite offering generally stated, BOTH IN PRINTED MATERIAL AS WELL AS IN THE "benefits spread sheet bullets" originally on the web site and their "Terms and conditions" FINE PRINT. It is satisfying to see that (IN RESPONSE TO COMPLAINTS POSTED ALL OVER WEB TRAVEL SITES) Marriott has finally amended their web site info to be consistent with ACTUAL policy!!! I think the reason I have been so adamant about this issue is that I hold Marriott to a higher standard and found this (NOW CORRECTED) inconsistency a DISAPPOINTMENT. I have LITERALLY spoken to over a dozen of the nice folks at "Marriott central" about this over the past months. THEY HAVE FINALLY DONE THE RIGHT THING...... TO THE FINE PEOPLE AT MARRIOTT.......... THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! I haven't yet had a thank you note back from them for MY tenacity in not letting this go???????? Oh well: NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED:)
