What's your opinion on Marriott having all kinds of hotel accommodations if you choose to pay CASH, but nothing ( at the same hotel, on the same date ) if you try to use points? What good are points if the hotels wont honor them?
Most travel companies need to make sure they only have so many rooms/flights/etc on points. It sucks when they don't have any availalble, but the staff doesn't accept points as their pay and they can't pay the water or electric bill with points either. At the end of the day, I want Marriott to be around for me when I need a place to stay and I need for them to be able to pay their staff and utilities, so I realize they need a certain amount of cash coming in every night. Rewards points are nice, but imagine if you were running a popular hotel and everyone wanted to stay on points. Now I realize if the hotels bought points for a certain amount of money and were given a certain amount when they are redeemed, that might do it..but I don't know how it works in the background.
Ok, I understand that you certainly can't give away all your rooms on points. However, let's assume for a minute that a hotel is holding "x" number of rooms for cash customers only. And let's say that the hotel doesn't ultimately book all of their rooms. So they have empty rooms that night that a points customer could have used. Here's my other comment: I think that "Marriott" should take care of its customers in every way possible. Somewhere along the line, I paid "MONEY" to get those points. And, after all, it's all Marriott. When a points customer requests a room, and there is only cash availability, then the hotel should be able to submit a voucher or "reimbursement request" to Marriott for the cost of the room. It's an internal matter of transferring points OR CASH from one account to another. I just think it is unfair and misleading to market a timeshare property with the line "Oh, and by the way, if you don't want to use your timeshare on any given year, you can trade it for POINTS to use at any Marriott hotel of your choice, based on availability. This customers opinion is that availability is availability. There should be no difference for POINTS or CASH.
Totally agree with you Dan. I am platinum looking to stay in Hershey or Lancaster this weekend and see there are rooms available but none on points. I assume they are waiting until last minute to get people to pay the high premium this weekend, but frustrating if you are a loyal member.
