I'm booked at the Oakland Marriott (visiting daughter in Berkeley). I've been reading some negative reviews about this property on other websites and am a bit concerned. Anyone have experience with this property? Give Elite status upgrades?
Yes, you will get upgrade; but the hotel is not in the best and safest neighborhood, it’s a good place as a business hotel if you are working/meeting in the downtown area; otherwise look for a hotel near Berkley in the Courtyard by Marriott Emeryville or stay in San Francisco, an easy “BART” ride to UC Berkeley.
Will you have a car? If so, that can greatly expand your choices.I will be going to Richmond in September for business and I am planning on staying at the Marriottat Fishermans Warf. I figure as long as I am that close to San Francsico I might as well take advantage of it.
Unless most all of your time is going to be spent in Oakland, stay in San Francisco. It is a very easy ride on the BART to get to Oakland. There are many BART stations in San Fran and there are many Marriott properties in San Fran. I was there in April and went to Oakland twice while there....took the BART for both trips. Ran like clockwork and was no issue at all. It was easy. San Francisco is a beautiful city. Oakland is, well, Oakland. If you have a car, it will cost to park it in San Fran, but I'm not sure how much more than Oakland. San Fran is not that easy to navigate with a car. Would suggest leaving it parked and use the Cable Cars/BART to get around the city and BART to get out to Oakland and back.
Changed everything with the excellent help of one of the agents on the Gold Elite phone line. Most everything was booked in the city for the weekend, so Emeryville it will be for the first few nights...then onto the city for the last few nights!!! I will have a car, but hope to use public transit as much as possible. I really appreciate everyone's comments...very helpful!
