I am traveling in a family vacation in July to Mt. Rushmore and am flying into Denver and than driving. Does anyone know some sights to see in route or Marriott's to stay while in the area? thanks for your ideas.
Yes, having done this trip from Denver, I stayed at the FF in Cheyenne, Wy. It was great and drove North to Little Big Horn. It was fascinating and then drove East to Deadwood, SD. Recommend doing this during the day as night driving is hazardous due to large amount of wildlife on the highways. Before you go, try to watch "North by Northwest", it will get you in the mood for Mt. Rushmore!
Lots of great routes up from Denver to Rapid City. If you want to just get there, head up the highway but if you have time, you can find some amazing scenery and pretty cool stuff by heading west slightly then north through the Rockies over Independence Pass on your way. Once in the Rapid City area, particularly at Mt Rushmore, makes sure you check out some of the more interesting roads. Definitely way more fun during the day but I've done it at night and well its completely different. Do it during the day first ;) Check out this site for more area information: http://www.visitrapidcity.com/sportseventsplanners/carmotorcyclecruising/blackhillssceniccruising/ironmountainroadpigtailbridges/
