I would recommend the Marriott L.A. Live if you want to stay downtown. I would recommend the Marriott Newport Beach or Irvine Marriott if you want to get out of the city and be in one of the prettiest places in SoCal. There is also a Marriott in Pasadena by Old Town that is nice for the family and close to many attractions. If your traveling with a family of 4, not sure of the ages, I would recommend not staying in the city as the traffic and noise is a mess. Irvine/Newport Beach is a very nice area (I happen to live there so I'm biased) but you are closer to Southcoast Plaza (High End Indoor Mall), Fashion Island (High End Outdoor Mall), Irvine Spectrum (Mid Level Outdoor Mall), very short drive to the ocean at Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, etc. It is also a short drive to Dana Point where you can go fishing or whale watching. From Dana Point you can also take a boat over to Catalina Island for a day or multiple day trip. And you also have s short trip to Huntington Beach which gives surfing lessons. All the areas around Irvine/Newport Beach have plenty of beaches, restaurants, sunning, etc. and what makes it nice is Irvine is usually voted the safest city in the USA. I'm a big Orange County fan and not so big on Los Angeles. But the choice is yours.
