Depends on your Maui destination. That said, most Maui hotels and condos - except three of four small places in Kahului and Wailuku - are some distance from the main airport at Kahului. (There is a smaller airport at Kapalua on the West shore -West Maui Airport - but that is limited to smaller commuter-size planes.) Most all Maui resort hotels and condos are on the island's south shore. Hotels and resorts in the Kaanapali/Napali/Kapalua area (southwest Maui) and the Kihei/Wailea area (southeast Maui) are anywhere from 15 to 35 miles from the Kahului airport, so unless you have relatives or good friends on Maui, you will need a rental car. Marriott's Maui Ocean Club is part of the Kaanapali Resort in southwest Maui, about 2 miles west of the city of Lahaina. We just checked out of there yesterday. It is an excellent resort on a great beach! You can take public transit from the Kahului airport (called "The Maui Bus"), but luggage beyond a shopping bag is not allowed on board. All the major car rental companies are on Maui but car rentals there - like everywhere else - are pricey. I have found Hotwire to be a reasonable alternative. Happy Trails!
