Anybody been to Beijing? I'm thinking about going there in November for 1 week. Do the Concierge lounges function like US Lounges? Any problems with security? I am pretty comfortable with the fact that my computer is always subject to hacking.
I was in Beijing this year and stayed at the JW downtown (near the Silk Market) if there is more than 1 - JW in Beijing. The lounge was probably the nicest I have ever been to....great food (sushi, fresh fruit, vegetables, breakfast was awesome, appetizers in the evening was more like a resturant and liquor selection superb.
I own a home in China and am married to a Chinese woman. BeiJing is extremely safe with very little problems. You might run into an occasional crazy guy but very rare. I have been to BeiJing over 20 times in the last 10 years just for reference. The Marriott Hotels in China, or anywhere out of the USA, are awesome and actually offer better services, food, atmosphere in the lounges. You really can't go wrong with any Marriott you pick because the transportation system is very good. I would recommend that you stay as close to the Forbidden City as you can, depending on your price limitations for the room, because that's where most of the attractions are. By the way, as the poster above mentioned, the Silk Market is right next to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. If you stay north of the city then you will be closer to the Olympics venues and also a shorter drive to the Great Wall. I feel in love with China about 10 years ago on my first visit and am going to retire there when I stop working in the USA. The people are wonderful and love everything western but the government is not. You might find that some of your emails are blocked/censured because of content but I have never had any issues with hacking. Your anti-viruses that work in the USA will work the same in China. Go and enjoy. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time.
I've ben there a number of times and always stayed at the courtyard which was in walking distance of the forbidden city. Don't let the courtyard brand throw you here. This is not the courtyard you will find in the states. It has a great lounge with free booze and plenty of good food. Asia is much better service than you will find in the US and they know how to treat elites. Enjoy and have a great time.
Actually the Club lounges are better then the U.S.! Excellent food and drinks with alcohol are all complimentary. I felt the Marriott and Renaissance caters to business travelers and mostly everyone working there spoke fluent English. At the Renaissance Beijing Capital hotel (Cat. 4) we were very pleased with accomadations, food and we also stayed at the JW Marriott in Shanghai (Cat. 5) and was highly impressed with the beauty of the hotel, service and quality. You get alot of bang for your points due to that the hotels are not high in categories but are very high end in quality and service. We went a year before the Olympics and it was one of our best vacations ever. November is a great time to go due to the mild weather, they do celebrate a National holiday so many people in China will be traveling that time to see the main tourist spots in Bejing like the Forbidden City, Ming Tombs, the Great Wall and the summer Palace but it was not bad. We had a personal guide and driver and took only my wife and myself touring in Bejing. We had no issues with crime and or theft what so ever and both of us don't speak any Chinese. Enjoy your trip!
which one will you choose? Generally the same brand Marriott in China is way better than what you have in US. For example, you will expect free alcohol(wine, beer), many kinds of dinner deserts, free wifi, etc in the concierge of JW Marriott in Beijing. And it's perfectly safe.
