I love the Marriot East Side. It is a very nice, but just outside the craziness of Times Square. It is 2 blocks from a subway stop, 3 blocks from a Crumbs Cupcakes (a New York obsession of mine) and very close to Rockefeller Center. If you are headed to times square it is a 25 minute slow walk or you can take the subway from 53rd street.
I have been staying in this area for work pretty much every other week for about the last year and a half so I have stayed at several of these hotels. I would say look for one of the midtown properties for sure. You have time square near and everything you want w/ in walking distance. Short train ride down town for the statue of liberty and an easy train ride to Yankee stadium. Now that being said I usually don't like to stay at the times square hotels just b/c that area is crazy:) To many tourist for my liking. They are all fine hotels I just think the area is to busy. I like to be able to walk to times square if I want but I don't like staying there. I prefer the Renaissance (hotel 57), and then the east side Marriott, and then the CY on 53rd and third ave. The Renaissance is a smaller hotel but very trendy and close to everything w/o being in the craziness. If you like crazy the Marquee is nice and the Renaissance times square are both nice.
