One hotel chain (not Marriott) is trying a new gimmick as it relaunches its loyalty program: flash sales send directly to members. Wonder iof it will work?
Probably a good idea...if you're going to be in the area where they are offering the 'special' rate or can easily get to it. If not, it won't matter.
Now, if the airlines and the hotels could actually get together for specials and the airlines could offer seats (to get to) and the hotels offer rooms in an area....now they've got something.
Remember Eastern Airlines and their 'Weekender' rates? That was a great way to travel and, if I recall, they had hotels that would offer special rates if you took advantage of the flights.
