Just spent a weekend in Austin. Two great "local flavor" spots for breakfast: Kerbey Lane and Magnolia. I would highly recommend either. For BBQ, I would recommend County Line. Finally, get down to 6th street in downtown for the sights and sounds of Austin. Also, check out Lady Bird Johnson park for the wildflowers which are in full bloom now.
One not for everyone thing to do in San Antonio is to visit the HQ of USAA Insurance. Warning-- there is a dress code for visitors, since this was founded as a military insurance company long ago and tradition is important to them (and me). I joined USAA as a 2LT in 1969 and have sent them alot of money since, but they have never disappointed me as a member.
My dad always enjoyed taking the family on factory tours and this is one that we've had fun doing--but as I mentioned, depends on your desires. Lots of stuff in San Antonio besides.
