I'm heading to Germany to visit one of my best friends this May. I really wanted to stay overnight in London one night so booked flights on the way back so I could land 330p in London and they fly out 1030am the following morning. I've been a number of times so its less "sight seeing" and more just spending some time along hte river, maybe walk around the tower or parliment or something. Also going to hit the Whiskey Exchange for some red label bottles :)
That being said, here's the advice I'd like to pick your heads about. Should I just stay at one of the hotels near LHR since I have to be at the airport around 8am or should I just stay downtown near the various places I want to see again? Part of me thinks just take the tube downtown after checking in near LHR and then come back later in the evening. Other parts say check out some other properties, like maybe the new Renaissance they are opening this spring. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!
Although my immediate reaction was to suggest you stay at the County Hall, I think with your timetable it makes more sense to stay at one of the airport hotels and then go to London without your luggage. Otherwise you'd use up at least an hour each way in travel time, some unpacking, plus you'd have to get to Heathrow fairly early the next morning for security. So I'd suggest staying at the airport then going into the city unencumbered.
I like the Professor's plan and have done a similar London plan myself. Consider checking your luggage to Germany upon clearing customs and just keeping bare essentials in a carry-on or back pack for your short time in London.
Take the tube from Heathrow to Westminster tube station. From there you can walk to a host of places including, Westminster Abbey, The Eye, #10 Downing, The Thames River walk, Churchill War Museum, etc. You should consider catching the "Big Red" bus if you would like to take a relaxing ride around London. You can get off/on at any of their stops. You can catch the bus right in front of the Marriott County Hall. The Marriott or Ren. at LHR are both nice. Remember to check when the shuttle runs from LHR, as we had to taxi because of the early hour.
Lastly, one of my favorite London dining spots is just by the back door of the Marriott.
See pictures, and enjoy your trip!
My stop over in the UK is on the way home, or I probably would check things along to Germany and stay downtown but I think the airport hotel makes the most sense. I just have to get to and from the tube but otherwise can do everything I'd like and catch the tube back later in the evening. I have a nice long flight at the front of the plane for the ride home so I'll catch up on sleep then LOL
Thanks again for the suggestions/comment/pics
Its a little shop buried behind a wine/beer store (Vinopolis) in central London on the south bank. Heck I asked some local cops and they didnt even know where it was but if you like a nice selection of Whisky, its pretty good and their knowledge is quite good.
Here's a pic of one of their walls from their site. Enjoy the trip, TONs to do there in London :)
