Just returned from a great extended weekend in New York City. Staying at the Marriott Eastside on Lexington Ave. could not be a better location for getting around (and being away from the madness and crush of people in Times Square). Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Madison Ave., 5th Ave., Central Park and a bunch of great restaurants are all within easy walking distance.
The staff at this hotel was (and has been on previous visits) excellent to deal with in every respect. The staff in the concierge room was friendly and asked if they could be helpful in any way during our visit with directions or things to do while there. The front desk placed us on the 26th floor, away from the nightly noise of the city. The bellmen were great in conversation and helping with anything we might want. All in all, a great experience.
Saw three performances (Promises, Promises; The Jersey Boys; and Billy Elliot while in town. All were very good although we liked the Jersey Boys the best (for nostalgic reasons). Basso56, PJ Clarkes (for the fun and crush of people), Smith and Wollensky's and a phenomenal breakfast outside at SaraBeths on South Central Park were our best food choices. A really fun trip and will certainly stay again at the Marriott Eastside on future visits.
Smith & Wollensky is 1 block from the Marriott Eastside. This is an outstanding restaurant. The staff have all been there forever! The last waiter we had in the restaurant had been there since opening day in 1977. The night bartender has been there 12 years. Obviously, the best consequence of the staff longevity is that the food and experience are fabulous! We have been to other S&W (and had some disappointments), but this one is tops! If you get to NY, don't miss it!. Last year we went to the S&W Bar & Grill (part of the restaurant on the side) after the Paul McCartney concert and found everyone there from the concert. Before we knew it, it was closing time (they're open until 3am or so and were having such a good time we didn't realize it). What a fun experience. We go there every time we visit NY. It's a 'not to miss' with us.
