I am hoping someone can enlighten me. I wanted to book a room for July 3-6, 2011, but couldn't because the online calendar was "grayed out" and would not let me book that far in advance. I have been watching every day for the dates to open up so I could book a room. They opened up today (Sunday, July 18, 2010), and when I went to book the room, there were no available rooms!! How did a very large hotel fill up IMMEDIATELY this morning prior to my attempt to book a room? When I called to inquire about this, I received no definitive answer. Can you book a room by phone further out than what their online inventory shows? If this is the case, then I'll start doing that. I truly do not believe the hotel is booked up as they said that was the case for these same dates in 2010, and many rooms did become available, but it is very frustrating to watch it as closely as I did just to be immediately shut out when the online calendar just became available. Thanks for any insight.
Thanks so much for your reply!! Yes, that is certainly possible. When I researched further, the Fairfield was also "sold out." That made my nervous enough that I booked a room at the Courtyard on Ontario just so I would have a place to land, but now I can watch it for the next year and see if any rooms open up since I would rather stay on Michigan Avenue. There is something big going on because July 5 is when U2 is coming back to Soldier Field (which is why I need the room), so there will be demand for hotel rooms on those dates between the holiday and the concert. Thanks again.
Now that we've identified that it's 4th of July weekend, and a U2 concert (and anything else that may be going on.....)
Did you consider that there may be a minimum night stay for the more popular hotels on Michigan Avenue? I'd try expanding the nights for your reservation, or calling the hotel direct and inquiring. Rather than checking in on Sunday, try arriving on Friday or Saturday and see if that improves your odds to get a specific hotel.
I recently made a reservation during a multi-day sporting event and learned that almost every hotel in the area had a 4 night minimum stay. Some had a 10 day minimum (the event is held over two weeks and many people were traveling from overseas for an extended stay). Just a thought.
Good luck that you will get the location you want for the dates you need.
