We love to visit the Rhode Island beaches as a family each year in late May, right before the season starts. Crowds are sparse, the beaches are free, and the weather is beautiful. This year, me, my wife, and our three kids (boys 4 and 2, and a 1 year old girl) stayed at the Newport Marriott.
One morning while playing on swings by the beach, my 4 year old son found a nickel. As I've been trying to teach him about work, savings, and spending, I asked him what he wanted to do with it. I've been slowly introducing the concept of investing, so I took the opportunity to ask him, "Do you plan to spend that nickel, or will you invest it?" He replied, "Invest it, dad!" Pleased with his answer, I asked, "What will you invest it in? Stocks?". He raised his eyebrows and his voice, and with an annoyed expression, shouted, "Dad! I already have enough socks!"
