marriott porte de monaco

Hi all,

While this will likely get lost in a pile of email responses that I can't check because of 'only most recent' ones showing, I am wondering if any of you have stayed at the Marriott in Cap d'Ail.  Although I am doing research in Provence, Avignon is significantly distant even on the TGV.  But I'm thinking about taking my first true vacation in years (though I certainly cannot complain about the places I go to in the course of my research).

I'm frankly not interested in casinos, though I love beaches, history and medieval villages (I know Eze is nearby).  Any frank thoughts on the property and whether it's worth the free stay I booked in late June/July would be wonderful.  I can always cancel it and do my purely historical (but alas not Marriott) thing by staying in Avignon for a week.

Thanks in advance,
ProfChiara

    Professor,

I have stayed there many times and it is one of my real favorites.

I am not a casino guy but really love Monte Carlo.  The hotel is great and I will show you some pictures.  The hotel is really nice and you can take a helicopter from Nice or take the train.  The drive is great as well.  We retraced on of our favorite movies, "To Catch a Thief" and enjoy the drive from there to either Lake Como or to the South, St. Tropez.

Good luck if you go, and enjoy the dining nearby at Saliere. A close walk on the water and very reasonable and great food.

    Dear Jerry,

I've missed your posts since everything went haywire at Insiders!  But thank you so much for the information.  I've pretty much decided I need a rest before starting a new book, so this sounds like the place -- with free airfare and free stay, it's hard to beat.  Your photos are fantastic and make me look forward to it.

    Thanks so much,

    ProfChiara

That's one of the things that's been so sad about the changes to the site -- it's very hard unless we simply complain to find or follow threads from the virtual friends we have met.  Let's hope Marriott gets things together soon.

I've pretty well decided to stay at the Cap d'ail Porte de Monaco, since I am in serious need of a real (non-working) vacation.  Before that Greece and Milwaukee, afterwards Paris, but all work.  (But in such places work always combines with pleasure!

    To you both!

    Hi Professor,

Where in Greece will you be going?  Have you been to Meteora?  The monestaries are truly unbelievable!

    Have an excellent trip!

    Wow, NewHilton!

How did you travel in Greece?  I would LOVE to go to Meteora, but since I only know kali mera, kali sera, and efcharisto, I would be scared to rent a car -- especially after some of the tours I took last time.  I'll be staying at the Athens Ledra, but would like to do excursions like Meteora.  Do you know private tour guides who do so?

Thanks so much for the great ideas!  I've already been (via tours) to (my favorite) Delphi, Epidaurus, Mycenae, Cape Sounion, and three of the closest islands on a long day tour, including Aegina.

I'd love any ideas you have or other places to see. I have booked one tour to ancient Corinth in advance since the days didn't work last time I was there and it definitely is something I want to investigate for teaching church history.

Cheers, (what's the word in Greek?)

    Hi Professor,

I can't say that we probably used the most efficient travel method to go to Meteora from Athens, there may (must!) be a better way but...

We took a train from Athens to Larissa and then a bus to Kalambaka.  Stayed there overnight.  Hired a taxi to be our tour guide to the monestaries.  The driver waited at each monestary while we toured it then we went on to the next.  At the end of the day, we did the bus/train back to Athens.

I can't tell you how highly I recommend seeing these monestaries... they are just fabulous!

    Dear Prof -

I agree with the positive post.  I think you will find the Monaco property to be excellent.  I have stayed there twice.  The last time, I was there was 3 years ago.  No concierge level, but breakfast in the restaurant.  I ate one evening at the restaurant and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food.  Monaco is very expensive so you can't beat the price when using points.  Enjoy!

    Judge, NH, and Prof.

    You all make this fun!

I am headed to Paris CE for the next few days, so will update you all on the latest!

Again, you really cant' go wrong at the Marriott Cap', Using points, I have found I can do Monaco pretty reasonably.  The city is so clean and safe, it is really a fun place.  Again, I like to travel out of there to other places.  Last time i went to the new bridge at Malliou.  It was a great trip thru South France onto Paris.

    Dear Klaus29,

Thank you so much for your travel hints about Monaco, and especially about not renting a car.  I will definitely take the bus from Nice.  How far is the train station for the Marriott at Cap d'Ail?  On  Tripadvisor I read some complaints about that.

Thanks, Klaus!  Actually they will be separate trips -- to Greece in a week and a half,  then home for five weeks before I go to Monaco.  Since I'm a Delta/Skyteam Platinum Medallion, the flight to Monaco is free, and in first class! I know many people say that it is hard to redeem miles for free flights, I have never had any trouble doing so with Delta, possibly because I book well in advance and am flexible in both travel dates and cities.

Enjoy your trips!  I go to Rome very frequently and it's one of my  favorite places in the world.

Fabulous hotel. I've had 6 stays there, it is right on the marina, and very close to a lovely beach. Try for a marina balcony room - I believe they are standard to guests using Marriott Reward tickets)Cross the road and you enter Monaco. A truly fabulous principality. The hotel provides a free shuttle to many local destinations, and the frequent airport shuttle for the airport stops by every hour or so. (60 minute ride - 20Euro return fare )If you wish to pay more, the heliport is only a few hundred yards away. Bus and rail transport is great, Monaco station is superb, maybe as good as GCS in NYC!

To LesliePamel and all the others who have posted such helpful information thank you so much!  I think I can say (barring another Icelandic eruption) that in late June early July I will be at the Porte de Monaco.  As for some time next week, it could be anywhere at the rate things in Athens are happening...  Should I end up in the midst of a revolution or in some farflung place I will be sure to post photos.

As Jerry and others have said, you are the people who have always made Marriott Rewards so much fun until the recent problems.

We are staying at this Marriott in mid-September.  Did you stay there this summer.  If so, what was your experience?  Did you stay in Avignon?  This area is also on our agenda so any thoughts on Provence would be great.
