In the absence of a Marriott in the area (a Fairfield Inn is under construction nearby) I've just spent a night at a Holiday Inn Exress, and find that it's comparable in some ways to Fairfield Inns, and the concept seems to be working.

Free Internet is OK, a tad slow, and requires a new login every hour if idle--not fun.

Beds are comfortable, linens starched, triple-sheeted beds, nice amenities (no slippers, sadly).  Rooms clean, baths large.

Every room has a microwave and fridge.

Still allows smoking on the top floor. Who knew?

Breakfast is more ample than that at Residence Inns or Fairfields, and varied as well.

So, when there are none to be had (Marriotts that is) this is a nice alternative.
