Where did 2016 take you?

So, with the clock ticking down on 2016, where did you travel in 2016?

I don't normally keep track like this, but - on the plane flying home this week - I went back through my calendar and, well, found myself shaking my head. This year was a bit more frenetic than I might have liked.  Also, given the brevity of many of my trips, I was disappointed to see how rarely I traveled with my camera gear this year. Also, to the extent I rarely control all of the variables, I found myself at Marriott properties on only half of my trips. (BUMMER)  Looking back, my 2016 travels included:

  • Flight miles
    • 105,000 United/Star Alliance miles flown
    • nominal miles on other airlines
    • no estimates on train and car miles (sorry)

  • Longest stay at any destination: 5 nights
  • Average stay: 2 nights
  • Shortest trip - see trip to Nowhere, above

How about you?

I posted my year-end blog entry a few weeks ago (County Collecting 2016 - the Year in Review) Check it out for details, but here are few notable points.

    • Marriott stays in 20 states (half of the 40 I visited in 2016)
    • Stayed at 15 Marriott brands
    • Logged about 17k miles behind the wheel and another 35k in the air.
    • 60 nights stayed in 53 different properties (only four 2-night, and one 4-night stay, the rest were all 1-night)
    • All my travel was leisure (about 18 separate trips averaging just over 3 days each)

(For each location tag, you will be guided through a 3-step process to add (1) a city and a state or a city and a country, (2) a Marriott brand, and (3) a Marriott hotel.)

Well my travels were not as extensive as those that have posted, but I did visit a few places - some personal and some for business...all were stays at Marriott properties!!!

    • February was Scrub Island for a week - very nice and relaxing
    • March was Oahu for 3 days - business
    • April was Dallas/Ft Worth - visiting family
    • July was Vermont - relaxing time with my wife and doing some hiking; also had a business trip to Philadelphia
    • August was a trip to the Berkshires...Tanglewood... awesome trip every year!!!
    • October was a trip to Sarasota - Ritz Carlton was awesome - enjoyed the beach and the pool.. we will be back!
    • November was another trip to Hawaii - Maui and Oahu... unfortunately a business trip....
    • December was Dallas/Ft Worth visiting family for Christmas....
    • Additionally my wife and I took small 2 day vacations throughout New England - mostly sightseeing with occasional visits with family in the area....

All in all, it was another great year of staying at Marriott Properties and earning points!!!!!

    Happy New Year to all!!!!!

Aruba for Winter 2017 and back to Scrub Island in 2018.... at least that's the plan right now....

What a great travel year for you!  I loved the Namibia wildlife photos.  What a spectacular experience that must've been.  You also earned enough miles for an int'l RT bus class ticket. Probably not even counting bonus miles.  Good going!

Looking at the miles I posted that were flown on United in 2016 appeared like quite a lot for the travels and it turns out it was.

I am such a goof as I included a 13,000 mile bonus I got for achieving the first level of the United Exclusive Offer they sent so actually only had 46,951.

Wow, look at you, all fancy schmancy with the color coding.  Nicely done!  Did you enjoy your Gaylord stay?  (I feel somewhat dubious regarding the brand.)  And how about Williamsburg?  Do you have an idea of how many nights would be sufficient for taking in all of the sights and activities at a moderate pace?

        Mr. Fancy Schmancy Replies:

I did enjoy the Gaylord stay. It's like a tiny village inside a giant hotel. Was upgraded to a huge suite with dining room and excellent view of the Potomac River. The hotel reminded me of a convention type location. Very friendly, knowledgeable staff.

Williamsburg is probably a two and half day full exploration. This at the moderate pace. If you hustle, two days would be plenty. It's also a short ride to deep inside the Tidewater Region that includes Virginia Beach. Tons of Marriott properties everywhere.

    Flight miles

53,145 on AS and partners (these are qualifying miles, have no idea how this correlates to real miles) with 46 qualifying segments.

11,312 on UA and partners (same as above) with 3.5 QS (3.5?  I don't recall parachuting out of a plane half way through a flight, lol.  And one whole segment must've been entirely a Fig Newton of my amalgamation!)  Anywho...

While I have jumped out of a helicopter, attached to a rope and in a harness of my own making (ladies first, and ya, that was a real gas), never out of an airplane, as in, "Look Ma, no hands!"  None of my 5 UA/LH segs were 1st class, and likewise, none of them were on the cheap either, so how you get 3.5 segs for 5 legs is beyond me. It must be that newfangled math that the money folks came up with when they re-crafted their frequent flyer programs.  The half seg is probably the seg where I only got credited 52 miles, lol.  Perhaps I should've rode my bike instead!

This was a fascinating exercise ssindc, as I have never taken the time to look at a travel year-in-review based on my Marriott stays.  I had a number of non-Marriott stays along the way too.

I stayed at 10 different Marriott brands in 2016, and the totals by brand were:

15 Courtyard, 10 Marriott, 3 Fairfield Inn, 2 TownePlace Suites, 2 Gaylord, 2 Renaissance, 2 JW Marriott, 3 Delta, 2 Autograph Collection, 2 SpringHill Suites

The amazing thing to me is the number of Courtyard stays.  I am not particularly a fan, but I have one close to my corporate headquarters for convenience, and I will stay at a Courtyard when there are no other Marriott properties nearby (and at a reasonable rate).

It's so fun to see where everyone has gone over the year!

We have a small cabin a few hours east of Seattle in a little town called Leavenworth, WA so a lot of my weekends are spent there.  This is not the Leavenworth that houses the state penitentiary

McMinnville, OR - 2 times but no Marriott available

Bend, OR - Once but stayed with family

San Antonio - Marriott San Antonio and La Cantera Hill Country Resort (not a Marriott)

Las Vegas, NV - Opted for the Vdarra for a completely smoke free hotel

Dallas, TX - Springhill Suites Addison

Puerto Vallarta Mexico - Casa Magna Marriott

Portland, OR - 7 times (Courtyard Beaverton, Courtyard Tigard, Courtyard Downtown Portland and Marriott Waterfront)

Maui, HI - 3 nights at the Marriott Vacation Club and 7 nights at the Marriott in Wailea

    I forgot my airline stats:

    UA:

    33,330 miles - 29.5 segments - $4097

    AA:

    37,449 miles - 30 segments

    DL:

    34,130 miles - 19 segments - $3185

And the big winner in airline screw ups this year was Delta which netted $900 in vouchers, although I had some delays on all 3 of them.  This was an upset over the reigning champion United, the airline that had held the screw up title for more years than I can remember.

We'd be on the road more if bikinchris didn't have to work!  I don't have anyone else to travel with and I just don't think I would have as much fun by myself; otherwise, I would not need a home. I'm much happier when I am traveling.

Hey folks - really enjoying the responses...

I wish I had more helpful answer and correct answer buttons to push, so I just "awarded" them somewhat randomly.

Not surprisingly, there are some serious road warriors - and some compulsive record keepers - active on this site!
