I was planning to use points for tomorrow night (Friday) in NYC. Any recommendations between the Fairfield Inn and Suites on 5th Avenue and The Renaissance? Any 3rd option? I have Platinum Status. Does the Renaissance have a CL that is open on Saturday for breakfast?
Since you're staying on points and the Renaissance is offering a PointSavers, consider the Ren. Consider calling Platinum about the CL - it's probably closed for the weekend beginning Friday afternoon. The Fairfield is new and provides BF, but it is mid-block on 37th which is a heavily-trafficked cross-town street from the Midtown Tunnel to the west side. Although Fifth Av in the name of the hotel sounds wonderful, and I really like the Fairfield brand in general, the location, the construction and the traffic takes away from the experience. Consider this 2 cents as I have never stayed there and probably never will.
Assuming that you're visiting NYC on leisure, also consider the NY Marriott Downtown also offering a PointSaver and the Courtyard Fifth Avenue. At the NY Marriott Downtown, Platinum might get you complimentary BF vouchers, no harm in asking.
Don't overlook that incidentals at Fairfield and Courtyard do not generate points. Also, the Arrival bonus at Ren or NY Marriott downtown alone is worth the value of a very good breakfast.
"I booked the Renaissance. Now I just hope I get the platinum upgrade."
Since Ren is offering a PointSaver, intuitively it means there are rooms available which they are eager to fill. Consider calling the Front Desk this morning, ask for an early check-in and if they will be able to honor your request for a complimentary upgrade.
The combo of 'early check-in' plus 'comp upgrade' may require manager authorization to block the room for you based upon Platinum status. But asking in advance is always better than throwing the dice.
Have a fun time and dress very warmly - New York is experiencing sub-freezing temperatures.
