"Want to Guarantee an Upgrade" in Booking Confirmation Page

I just booked a room for later this year and for the very first time that I've noticed within the booking confirmation once you make the reservation there is a box asking if you would like to guarantee an upgrade and a specific room type noted along with the amount.  I've seen this with Hilton, but not with Marriott previously.

Has anyone else noticed this and if so how long has it been showing up?

Only at the SF marquis. Though the upgrade charge came out to be the same as booking the room rate for that room so I hardly considered it an upgrade.

That would certainly not be an upgrade.  I might have to look at the suite and see if the rate is the same as the room I booked plus the upgrade fee.

I feel like I've seen it but then again, all of the hotels and portals start to blend together to the point that I have logistic nightmares.

I feel like I saw it at a recent stay at a Renaissance in St. Louis, maybe. I didn't take it assuming I would be upgraded. I wasn't. it was fine though, it's all about karma I feel. The room we had was fine.  When I need the upgrade the karma gods will bless me, I hope.

I'll keep my eyes out for one.

Yes, last weekend at the Marriot Toronto Airport, I booked my usual lowest price room and my confirmation came back as a "corner king suite". I thought that was odd so went back and saw what that was, an it was 60 dollars more to book if I wanted to pay for it. It was not a full suite, but a larger room on the corner overlooking the golf course.

I have never seen what you describe IAHFLYR but I have been offered paid upgrades on the Virtual Concierge email a few days before arrival.  However, this always works out at the exact difference in price between the room I have booked and the price for the superior rooms.  So not a complimentary or lower cost upgrade.  Just an attempt to get me to buy a higher grade room.

I think I remember seeing that on a booking a couple weeks ago. The "upgrade" wasn't an upgrade though, it was literally the same room so it made no sense at all. I obviously didn't "take advantage" of it.

I saw it when booking a Fairfield Inn in Waterbury,VT.  Before I finalized my reservation it came-up with and upgraded to a guaranteed larger room.  With only 2 nights being booked I figured I would take my chances and see if I get a Platinum Member upgrade when checking-in.
