Best restaurants and bars in Rome near City Center

We are going to Rome in May and staying at the Hotel Mediterraneo  on Via Cavour in the City Center. We couldn't get into the Marriott and the travel agent who booked our wine and food tour booked us here.  Is anybody familiar with this area and can recommend restaurants and bars.  Also, we are going to be here on a Sunday and I understand a lot of restaurants and bars are closed on Sundays.  We love wine and food.  Do you have any suggestions on places that are open on Sundays?  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Also, any tours or tour guides you would recommend.

    dreamtrip,

For one cocktail and one meal, here goes:

    One Cocktail:

Harry's Bar, across from The Marriott, Grand Flora, on the Via Vanetto.  A historic place that has locations in Paris and Venice and is really a classy place:

This is an attractive place, and great for "People watching"!

One special meal would be Mirabelle's in The fine hotel.  Behind Harry's Bar.  It is relaxing and elegant.  Not too expensive, but wonderful food and service.

    Good luck!

If you want to walk a little and pass by some sites, head towards Piazza Navona (but don't go to the average food, overpriced restaurants in the piazza).  For an excellent cocktail outside (or in) go to Mimi e Coco one street off the main piazza.

After that I'd walk 5 minutes north of piazza and go to Old Bear for the best cacio e pepe I had in Rome (and a huge beer/wine selection)!
