Happy New Year all! I'm planning on a trip this Spring to Cairo and staying at either one of the Marriots (Casino or JW). Anyone have any recommendations/suggestions? I am a single traveler and a bit anxious about my safety. I'm also thinking of Luxor, and Sharm el Sheik and staying at one of the Marriott resorts. Again, suggestions would be appreciated and helpful! Thanks!
I've just returned from Cairo and stayed at both the Casino and JW while I was there (JW in transit back from Luxor to London).
In terms of location, the Casino is right downtown in the uber-busy urban sprawl of Cairo...it can be intense if you're not at all a city person. The JW is on the outskirts, but close to the airport. Both hotels are excellent as its relatively cheap and easy to get around via taxi or escort (although the traffic downtown is horrific at all times). The Casino is literally a converted palace. It was built for the christening of the Suez Canal and has since been converted to a hotel. The GM there is extremely friendly and a US expat. If you're a history buff and/or in town for just a couple of days I'd recommend staying here due to the central location and easibility making your way to local sites. The JW, on the other hand, is a brand new shiny resort. Its location makes it my recommended choice if you're not an avid international traveler. Easy transfer to hotel is available from the airport (via hotel shuttle service), and, as you'll find, there are no metered taxis for tourist and negotiating with taxis can be interesting.
The Concierges at both hotels are highly helpful, and if you don't book tours prior to your arrival they'll help you book whatever you need. In summary, both are great 5-star hotels. If you're interested in immersing yourself in the culture and experiencing downtown Cairo stay at the Casino (which isn't what you would stereotypically think of a casino), and if you're not an avid international traveler and more interested in a relaxing vacation I'd go with the JW. (The JW also offers a daily shuttle to/from downtown but I didn't take it so I can't provide any good feedback for you on that)
Hope that helps. All the best with your travels
I don't have any suggestions about the hotel, but maybe about things to do in Cairo....
I was in Cairo about ten or twelve years ago and asked the concierge about booking onto one of the tour buses that go to the pyramids and other sights/sites.
He persuaded me that, for very little extra cost, it would be better to get an air-conditioned limo, a driver, and a professor from the local university to take me round.
It was all organised for me including trips to see the Pyramids, the Saqqara, the Sphinx, a papyrus factory (interesting), a traditional perfume factory (less interesting). and lunch - all for (from memory) about US$50.
Really good personal service, and I got chance to go inside a pyramid.
Casino is the best. JW is near the airport, but away form everything. The Cairo Marriot (Casino) is river front and in the middle of everything. It is highly secure and has everything you want. There is no Marriots in Luxor, but you can book a 4 days Nile cruse package, which you will never forget. You fly to Aswan, visit Abu Simbel then the cruse will take you to Luxor with the best 5 stops in wonderful memrable places. You fly back to Cairo from Luxor. You can also fly to Sharm El Shiekh and have the best snorling and vist Rass Mohamed, and you can have a trip to Moses mountail and otherplaces. You shoud ask for the woterfront Marriott. The place is safe and you will have a trip of your life.
