So I have been very quick to comment about Marriott's that rank towards the bottom; now I should give credit to a great Marriott.
The Vinoy in St. Petersburg is simply fantastic.
Only problem: they keep upgrading me into a larger room; the large rooms are not in the old part of the hotel but in a newer wing. And the rooms are absolutely enormous! But the old part of the hotel is also very charming.
I have been at this hotel several times and only once was able to keep my small room in the old part of the hotel. Yikes: they are too nice.
The dining room is beautiful;the bar in the middle of the dining room is beautiful. The outdoor veranda: well we all should have one.
The very best place you can find that is a Marriott.
Agreed! My wife and I enjoyed the Vinoy at St. Petersburg in April 2009. We had a corner suite in the new wing with two balconies so we could see the marina and pier as well as the upscale neighborhoods of St. Petersburg.
We would have indulged in the Spa but they had reduced operating hours. The dining al fresco was very enjoyable and the smoke-free pool deck was not only luxurious but worth an afternoon of care-free relaxation.

Three of the best getaways ever for us were at the Vinoy. Old building (by choice) each time, but in the "larger" corner rooms with balcony and great views. It's been 2 years since last there...do they still deliver the coffee to the room each morning? Great golf, too. I agree, a top of the line Marriott property.
