Just Curious...

Why does Marriott give different promotions to the different Rewards levels?  Example:  I am a Gold member.  During the recent Courtyard Promotion, I received 5,000 bonus points for staying three nights in Courtyard hotels.  My colleague, a silver member received 10,000 bonus points.  (While I am not sure of the number of nights he had to stay, I do know that I stay in Marriott properties much more than he does.)  Whyy not give all members an equal chance.  I understand wanting to entice silver members to stay more frequently, but I would think that retention of higher level gold/platinum members would be at th very least equally important.

Are you certain your colleague is silver? I received the 10K Courtyard promotion as a platinum member. My experience has been that Marriott offers higher bonus point promotion for each level...silver would have the most conservative bonus, platinum the most liberal.
