Looking to head down to DC this weekend. Which hotel would be the closest to the National Basilica located at 400 Michigan Ave.? Walking distance would be great, although using the Metro is a good option also. I read somewhere that parking is available at the Basilica, so maybe it's a better option to stay outside of DC? Any suggestions would be helpful.
I visited the Basilica during my last visit to DC, August 13 - 16. The Basilica was beautiful as were the grounds of the Catholic University of America.
I was staying at the Mayflower and took the Metro. You can take the red line to the Brookland/CUA stop and then it is a short walk through the grounds of the University to the Basilica.
If the hotels in DC proper are too expensive I stay at the Gateway in Crystal City and they have direct access to the Metro so it is easy to get around.
Below is a link for more information, parking, hours, etc. and there is additional info on this site from other Marriott Insiders about the Basilica so you may want to check those out as well.
Enjoy; I did.
muppetwrangler Hopefully more Insiders will chime in with suggestions. In the meantime, you may want to refer to these other threads that discuss hotels in the DC area. insidenji has given a more detailed description of the Mayflower hotel in that thread below. I haven't been to DC before so I'm sorry I cannot give a recommendation!
My knee-jerk reaction is that it doesn't make a lot of sense to plot your stay closest to the Basilica - there are so many better locations, and it's easy to get there from many directions. (But, hey, it your trip!!!)
