Staycations

Summer is slowly winding down. The kids are back in school and football season is about to begin. All very important things. Now is the best time to take a staycation!

For some of us, a staycation is a trip not too far from home. To see the city lights at night. To be a block from your favorite coffee shop for an early morning cup. To experience the best and brightest of your local metropolitan area. To get away from the dishes in the sink for a night! The reasons are many, the options are endless.

We follow your trips around the world, some for months at a time (ahem, @brightlybob) But sometimes, a trip close to home is all one needs to refresh the mechanism.

So, here’s the real question:

We know you folks dot the globe. From Houston in the south to Hawaii in the west, the UK to Pittsburgh, Florida to Maine. You Insiders are everywhere, and you know the scoop, so here’s the real question(s):

How would you define a staycation? Furthermore, what would your ideal “staycation” look like?

The only staycations we've done are an overnight at a local Marriott to use up a soon-to-expire free night certificate or a stay at the nearby casino resort on a comped room because one of our friends is a big roller and gets lots of perks at the casino.

We don't really need a reason to go because we can always find somewhere great to eat, somewhere great to stay, and some great activities.  In fact, we went to the Big Easy last week-end for a Saints pre-season game.  We shared the Marriott Convention Center Hotel with the New England Patriots.  The Marriott CC is within walking distance of the Superdome.  Their concierge lounge is open 7 days a week.  The staff is great.  What more could you ask for?

'Staycations' are a great way to really appreciate the area around you.  For me, it tends to fill my travel void when I'm not exploring/traveling as much as I would like to be.  Looking forward to what the community has to say, as we all live in different areas and have lots to be shared.

I am in the process of a staycation right now here in Vegas at the J.W.Marriott in Summerlin, NV. Plan to right it up after we are done.

Based on the word "stay" I define it as getting away for 1 to 2 nights at a local hotel. My favorite is the JW Desert Ridge up the road a few miles. I will be using my free Cat 5 night to spend the night at the Renaissance in downtown Phoenix. We use my wife's Cat 5 free night to spend the night at the Residence Inn in downtown Tempe. Both the Cat 5 trips involve jumping on the light rail in front of our condo to go to either downtown. Since we are early riser's we will even do the overnight on a week day (have access to Ren lounge) and then go home and go to work the next morning.
