Just saw this article....
I honestly don't know about #1 as it is a well known fact everyone here on MRI doesn't think the Wailea Marriott is all that great. I have stayed at the Renaissance in Sonoma and while it was nice, it wasn't spectacular. I think the Westin in Napa hits it out of the park.
What does everyone think?
There wasn't much meat to the article. Nice photos, but they look like they were pulled right off the Marriott website.
I can't speak from experience, but I picked the Maui Marriott Beach Club (MVC) over the Wailea Marriott based on comments from Insiders. In fact there are a number of people from this forum who could have put together a better list and written a better article. Sorry for not being more impressed.
I like the intent of the post, just not the execution.
That's the response I was hoping for. I read BoardingArea daily, which for those who aren't familiar it is a site that has roughly a dozen or more bloggers that post all kinds of travel related stuff on it. I wanted to throw it out on MRI so us Marriott experts could basically shred it. Not only is their methodology IMO flawed, but there is no real "meat" to the post. This was exactly the response I expected from a great MRI like yourself.
Great article. As I've mentioned before, I am a huge Essex House fan. I love that place and consider it one of my all-time favorite hotels of any brand in any city. Haven't stayed at any of the others. We are regulars in Ft. Lauderdale and have stayed at the MVCI there as well as the RC next door, and I like both of those properties. Will have to try the Marriott there next time. Looks like it more of a true resort than the RC which is resort-like but also in a very urban location along the strip. The Ft. Lauderdale RC will be hard to beat, though. We were there last fall for the boat show, and the front of the hotel was lined with Lamborghinis, Bugattis, Ferraris, Bentleys, Rolls....you name it. The people in the lobby were dripping with diamonds, there were middle eastern guys who looked like sheiks, and the like. I've been all over the world in some pretty fancy places, and I've never seen anything like it. Needless to say, we didn't fit in all that great with our Chrysler 200 rental car and Samsonite luggage.
Here are my favorite that we've personally stayed in no specific order:
I also love the Marco Island Marriott and am anxious to see what it looks like in 2017 when the re-branding to a JW is complete. We stayed a few months before it closed for the summer, and it's re-opened now but still undergoing a $200M refurbishment. I thought the rooms were excellent as is and much nicer than the typical Marriott. And the amenities at that place are top notch. I'm hoping they improve the restaurant that used to be called Tropiks. That place was kind of chaotic. We did love Kurrents, though, and I understand they are working on a remodel/rename of that place. Plus they have some new restaurants. I also agree that the Renaissance Downtown Chicago is a very solid choice, but my true love in Chicago is the JW.
Gotta say, #1 shouldn't be on the list. Period. At least based on my experience there. I'd much rather stay at the CY Kahului Airport than go back to the Wailea Marriott... Or stay at the neighboring Andaz Maui or Grand Wailea instead
In fact, I agree with the others saying the list just isn't good at all... but then again, she does come from a different perspective that a lot of us I guess. Not trying to make excuses or anything haha!
I sadly don't have much experience with Marriotts within the US... something I hope to change in the not too distant future.
Thanks for the shoutout, ks77 but alas I just don't have much experience of US Marriotts having only stayed at:
New York Marquis
To my (very small) mind however these hotels seem to be based on something akin to press releases rather than personal stays. Was mommypoints struggling to find something to post that day?
