I'm planning a trip for next spring to Paris and plan on staying at the Champs-Elysees property using points. I'm encountering a problem where rooms containing two beds aren't available for redemption although they are available for cash.
Has anybody found a way around this limitation?
Ask Platinum Elite to contact the hotel on your behalf. As a tip, confirm a standard room for points with a request for a complimentary upgrade to whatever you wish. Closer to arrival, reconfirm by calling Platinum Elite back or call the hotel directly. Unless the hotel is hosting a large group or a bridal party they will strive to accomodate your request and likely exceed it.
A problem did surface once. Due to poor weather, travel was delayed and we checked in an hour later than scheduled. During that period, a walk-in w/o a reservation who was also stranded by the weather conditions was assigned the room paying 2x my rate. I'll spare the details on the room I received - which in the end was free.
Since we are talking about Paris, consider not throwing the dice and guaranteeing an upgrade once you get the standard using points.
I called Platinum and I was told they couldn't do anything and that I should contact the hotel directly. I insisted that there must be something they could do and she replied she tried all options and overrides.
Reserving a regular room would be too risky for me in the event an upgrade didn't come my way. We would be stuck with a king room for all four of us.
Recalling that Marriott did not receive the Freddie for Award Redemption, (Hilton did) Marriott Rewards makes you work harder to redeem, regrettably. Translation: Call back. Repeatedly. Let them know you are struggling and appreciate their help.
Example. In spite of the economy, Marriott opened a number of properties in new markets. One of them is in a prime oceanfront area where I've stayed before with another brand. It's been awhile since I've been there but I wanted to experience the area for the upcoming Labor Day holiday and determined to use Marriott points. I called Platinum six times. I tried different days of the week and different times of the day. Sunday morning 10 am worked. The Platinum desk was able to connect with the Front Desk manager. Given the time difference, think through the best time to contact Platinum so they reach the Front Desk in Paris at that magic moment when the Front Desk manager is there. Good luck.
I took matters into my own hands and sent an email to the hotel describing my situation Although I didn't get a reply, I did get a confirmation 12 hours later for an Executive room with two beds.
Hopefully by next June they will still offer Plats their incredible complementary breakfast.
I couldn't be happier.
Try having the "Hot line" make a three way call, during Paris business hours, first!
Then confirm with email address given to you by hot line, or go directly to hotel web-site!
Get confirmation and names of people you will be seeing there.
It is worth the time and trouble to stay at this fine property!
