Does anyone know of any bargain shopping places in NYC besides the standard discount chain stores?

Century 21 is the best that we've found. Right across the street from Ground Zero, the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan.

Good prices and NYC does not charge sales tax on most clothing items under 110 dollars. Very crowded but some bargains there to be found.

    Here is their website:   http://www.c21stores.com/

Hard hit by the economy, there are still numerous sole proprietors with buy/sell, apparel, discount shops and 99 cent stores throughout the 5 boroughs of NYC.  Focusing on 'places', 'neighborhoods' and 'streets' in Manhattan* where bargains*** may be found:

    • Uptown/Harlem 125th Street has seen better times. The area/street is devastated by the economy with the closing of 600+ stores.
    • Midtown: Robust and thriving, West 34th Street, Herald Square, Broadway upper 30's, Seventh and Eighth Avenues circumscribes the Garment District where you're likely to find upscale apparel in showrooms at clearance prices.
    • Midtown South: Very robust and thriving East 14th Street, Broadway and Union Square. As natives, we particularly enjoy shopping there on Saturday for Greenmarket** at the Union Square Farmers Market, one of the most vibrant venuew among the many throughout New York City.
    • Downtown/Lower Manhattan:  Broadway from 8th Street in the Village to Houston and beyond is already transformed and very vibrant.  Delancey Street is undergoing a transformation.  Canal Street and Mott Street/Chinatown/Little Italy you can find knock-offs of major designer brand leather goods, watches and costume jewelry.

Keep in mind, you can find items for sale from the upscale in mint condition to items that fell off a truck, came off a fishing boat, got hit by a bus - you name it on the streets of Manhattan. It's not the bazaar of Marakesh, but always be a streetsmart shopper.

Better get here soon!  They are talking about taxing clothing again.
