The pictures of the Phuket Marriott Spa Resort look fabulous.  Anyone stayed there recently??  What did you think?  Location good?  Restaurants good?  Thanks!

The JW Marriott Phuket Resort is fabulous!  We stay there a couple of times a year (last was in March) and love every minutes we stay there.  The grounds are beautiful, the staff quite nice, the pools are great.  The restaurants are good, but pricey.  The location is great for some and not for others.  If you want to be at the resort then it is great because it is only about 15-20 minutes from the airport.  If you want to sightsee you can take tours from the Marriott.  If you want to shop the location is not good - the JW is not near anything.  Phuket town or Patong beach are about an hour away and taxis are expensive.  We don't go for that so we are very happy with the quiet location.  Note: If a primary reason for going is to swim in the ocean (it is great!) you need to be aware that there are times of the year that you won't be able to do that.  There can be a strong rip tide, expecially during the rainy season (nominally mid May to Mid September) - flags are put out each day and red means you can't swim - that is pretty much the standard during the rainy season.

We can strongly recommend the resort, one of the nicest places Marriott has to offer in Asia.Stood there twice, once in the MVCI villa.Great service-don't miss the Spa or the Thai massage at the beach!Restaurants are pricy, the resort is in the middle of nowhere. We've hired a car all day long,or try to drive yourself which is an experience of its own-on the left side..

we have stayed there twice for at least two weeks each time.  great resort.  prices outside the resort are quite reasonable, almost cheap.  inside marriott, prices are expensive and just like in the USA.  Massages on the beach are cheap, and they will even go to your room.

Only problem is the uprisings - both times we have been there, there have been major problems - the last time, the airports were closed and we had to take a taxi for 6 up to bangkok - 12 hours and $800 later, to get back home.

with the exception of the politics, the place is a great vacation spot

I have stayed at over 400 different Marriott properties around the world on business.  Although it is not that recent, I stayed at this Marriott in December of 2002.  It is the nicest hotel I have ever stayed in.  6 stars are definately deserved.  Service is wonderful.  They have their own secluded beach that is beautiful.  It is a self contained resort.  If you want some local flavor, there used to be some small "shack style" restaurants you could walk to just off the property.  The only downside is they are a 45 minute drive from Phuket Town and Phuket Beach (both of which are seedier locations) if you are looking for nightlife.  Otherwise, you can plan to lose your cares here.

We've been 3 times.  Once as a couple and twice with kids.  It's our favorite resort we've been to anywhere in the world.  The restaurants on property are all VERY good.  The resort is pretty secluded and if you're in to night life, it's about a $40 taxi to Patong (about 40 minutes away).  Great golf course about 5 minutes from the resort.  You will love the resort.

I own at the marriott Custom House in Boston. I have exchanged to many of the MVCI properties, and have found Phucket to be the best. The Thia people are the friendliest and resepctful. The villas at the property are large, and have a tropical setting. Because it is part of the JW Marriott, you have the use of the restaurants and spas. The infinity pool is a signature of the JW name, and everything surrounds a waterfire pool that looks great at night. I also enjoyed looking out at the ocean at night. Usually it is pitch black, but at that location, you see the squid boats fishing at night along the horizon with their lights on to attract the fish. It gives an added atmosphere. We took a speed boat ride for the day to PHI PHI island, where the movie The Island was filmed. There was great snorkling everywhere. Even though the resort is on the north end of the island, it is close to the airport, and there is a lot to see and do in the area. We spent a week there, and wish it were longer.

Been there 3 times and it is our family's favorite resort.  The property is beautiful, the beach is pristine, but the staff has to be the best there is. We hope to go back next Thanksgiving.
