My Travel Tip for the New York City area is don’t stay in the city! I have taken college students to NYC three times and we always stay in Westchester County at one of these Marriott properties:
Courtyard Tarrytown/Greenburgh: http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/hpngr-courtyard-tarrytown-greenburgh/
SpringHill Suites Tarrytown/Greenburgh: http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/hpntr-springhill-suites-tarrytown-greenburgh/
Westchester Marriott: http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/nycwe-westchester-marriott-tarrytown/
The reasons are numerous, but the Tarrytown/Greenburgh area is safe and less expensive for weekend stays. My students also get the experience of riding the Metro North Train from Tarrytown to Grand Central Station, which they absolutely love!
Great tip. When in Tarrytown, check out this hidden gem and one of the notable Historic Hotels in America, the very charming, Castle-on-the-Hudson. Do bring wine for the steward to sample.
Great idea, for a groups on a tight budget!
One of the problems we have encountered and why we stay in the city, is the weather uncertainty and needing to change clothes during the day. It is so nice to take a break during the day and just relax for awhile in you own room that is close to Times Square. Our favorite is The Courtyard at Times Square South.
