I know that there is great variation among frequemt travelers in taste, but here is a radical case of difference. My wife and I found the London County Hall hotel and its Concierge Lounge very far from desirable. The hotel itself is rather shabby, the room we had was pathetic (note that I am Platinum), the restaurant is adequate but one not worthy of a return visit, and the Lounge and its prentations were far below that which I've found in other European hotels (with the price of wine at the County Hall Lounge incredibly high). I agree that the location is excellent, and that the staff is friendly and helpful, but my compliments stop there. In several weeks, I will be back in London when I will be staying at Hyatt's The Churchill which has a first rate Regency Club.
As posted elsewhere, since January 15, 2009 there are new "rules of engagement". Marriott's promise is to "revive, refresh and re-energize." When slippage occurs and conditions are "shabby" there is a failure to deliver on that promise. Consider requesting a refund. Write to Customer.Care@marriott.com
There are several Insiders who have done that and not only received apologies but refunds. This illustrates that Marriott continues to be a company with integrity - they will back up the promise.
By the way, conditions in Concierge are in transition. As a result of the global outcry in presentation and offerings, corporate issued new directives last week. See HOORAY for CONCIERGE LOUNGES! Let's hope it's more than chicken strips twice a week as charlydog observes.
If you really have concerns over this hotel, I can only share this thought. I would stay there again, anytime! My other choice would be Grosvenor Marriott.
But on my first time to London, or my last I really like the County Fair.
How about a word from the Marriott Platinum member who lives in London?
My wife and I stayed at this hotel about a year and a half ago. Regettably, we did not have concierge level privilages.
The building had the entrance under construction. The lobby was a little weird, the front desk area was off to the side, it just seemed pretty different. However, the room was great, spacious and comfortable and the hotel was run well. Everything went fine. Can't comment on the concierge lounge, but we did have the $40 breakfast one day, which was good albeit overpriced - normal for London. Oh, it was also about a mile and a half walk from the elevator to our room - but we enjoyed ourselves.
