If you are not paying for the room, and the room is direct billed to someone other than you, then that's a different story, Are you part of a group that is paying for the accomodation? If you are then it a no-pointer, sorry.
If you yourself are paying then that deserves a call to the folks in SLC. The rules are that every property, regardless of who owns it, with a Marriott name will grant points (Unless it is a reward stay). Residence Inns give you 50% of the points, since they are long stay, plus the 500 point Platinum bonus, if you chose it over a snack, and they should give you 50% on top of the points earned.
