For the person wanting to maximize his rewards, getting the Marriott credit card is really great because you can really rack up points there. Also, consider looking into Marriott ownership. Marriott has the best program we have seen so far (we are also members of Hilton's ownership, and Grupo Mayan) for "time share" which is really much more than that. We own on Kauai (Waiohai Marriott) and in Palm Desert, CA. We use the Palm Desert time to convert to points each year so we can go anywhere in the world and stay at Marriotts. Once you are an owner, you also join Interval International, which has fabulous "Get-Aways" that can cost you as little as $200 for an entire week in a great timeshare. You can also trade your Marriott week or weeks to Interval International for use on any of the properties available through them. We have not chosen to do this yet because the use of points, our time on Kauai, and the Get-Aways through II are so great.
In addition, when you are using your points for a trip, call your trip adviser at Marriott. You may luck into a deal like we did where we converted some points to airline miles for a trip to Australia and were able to get a free week at any Marriott (level 5 or below) just as an add-on for no extra points! We went to Cancun on that one!
