I agree with your reluctance about the mega casino hotels.
A family member owns a 3 bedroom villa at Grand Chateau. Spacious, contemporary and great views on the high floors. A villa may be over the top for one person, but a good choice if your party is larger. The GC also has efficiency and 1 bedroom lockout units for rent.
As an alternative consider the Las Vegas Marriott Suites. I stayed there on business in 2002 and believe the hotel had a complete refurbishment recently.
We stayed there for a week in Feb 2009 when we were on a house hunting trip. I stayed in a two bedroom villa and was not dissapointed. Not as nice as Estepona, Spain or Phuket, Thailand but very nice. It won't dissapoint and it's a block back from the strip.
We bought a vacation home here so have not been back there since.
I am in Chicago, enjoying the FF! I must get a real life! With the carryover, I am over 160 nights already this year and it's not even March!
The Las Vegas GC does look great. I have your suggestion of Wentworth by the Sea, and now LVGP on my want list!
How about you starting a "Best Marriott's" award! It does not have to be based upon price or location, but just "Value"?
Maybe Stepping would contribute, as well as Cornhusker, Mike and PPrincess?
