I have stayed at the Amsterdam Marriott a few times, and found it to be very good. The location is great, rooms typical Marriott (not so small like many European hotels), good service. It is a VERY American hotel though, so if you are looking to experience the Dutch culture, this is not for you. If you are looking for the US at night after visiting Amsterdam during the day, you will enjoy this property.
My wife and I stayed at the Renaissance last November and loved it. Great location. The concierges were the best I've ever encountered. Our room was terrific. They were upgrading and we got one of the new rooms.
We stopped by the AMS Marriott while out for a walk and checked out the public areas. It's way bigger than the Renaissance (not a plus for us) and the location wasn't as convenient.
In any case, enjoy your trip. Amsterdam is one of the great walking cities of th world.
This is an alternative. I could not get into either the Marriott not the Ren. using points so I stayed at the airport Courtyard using points. It was great, I took their van to the airport and took the train downtown for two days. Did everything I wanted to do, Ann Frank House, Canal cruise, red light, etc. and had a great time.
You can't go wrong with any property, but the Courtyard was great for a few nights.
Renaissance is close to the main train station but I like the location of the Marriott. I have been staying at the Marriot for 25 years. Neither hotels have renovated apart from the C lounges and addition of a health club. I explained what to see in See how to get there;http://www.elitepro-travel.com/2008/10/windmills-souveniers.html .Tourists like to go to the Rijks museum and the many other attractions in Holland but the place that most visitors describe as the highlight of their visit is, - Zaanse Schans INFO on elitepro-travel.com is a must see.
We stayed at the Marriott recently and liked it very much. It is right near the Van Gogh Museum and Rijkmuseum as well Brgijnhof courtyard. It is also near the American Hotel which has a great (upscale) restaurant. We walked to the Renaissance while there and yes it is near the trains, but to us it was in a a noisy/congested area. We felt the Marriott was in an ideal location. It is also a 3 minute walk to Leidseplein which has great-casual bars and restaurants and a movie theater. The staff was very friendly and the rooms had been recently renovated. Cocierge lounge had internet access as well as local foods, alcohol, etc. We really enjoyed our stay here. Have fun
I've stayed at AMS Marriott several times several years ago. I liked the location near the Leidsplein. You can walk to museums, anne frank house, casino (if you are interested). Rooms are a bit small by US standards, but nice. Restaurants and pubs are close, as is shopping.
If you are looking to be near central train terminal or RL district--they are a hike from here.
I, like others that have posted have stayed at the Rennaisance a few times. It was great due to it's location and close proximaty to everything. It is however a European Hotel so don't expect the same quality of rooms as in the states.
Staff was friendly and they have a great welcome reception daily in the conceirge room.
Could not get into the Ren. or Marriott on Points so I had two nights at the airport CY and enjoyed it greatly.
Yes, it was a little hassle to shuttle to the airport and take the train to downtown but for what I wanted to do in the city in two days.
Am going back this summer and would do it all over again if I have to.
