An Oasis in Athens

This summer we had the priviledge of traveling abroad to Turkey and Greece.  With 6 in our family, we knew the cost would be high, and we did our best to economize.  Since we planned a year in advance, we were able to use Marriott points for the Athens portion of our trip. How happy we were to see that the Athens Ledra in Greece allowed 4 people to stay in one room!  This is unusual for Europe, as often only 2, perhaps 3 adults are allowed per room, and many times Euros are charged for the additional adult.  Another 'Eureka' moment occurred when PointSavers came up and we were able to reserve our entire 5 day stay for for two rooms with fewer points than initially thought. Not only that, but because we are Gold Rewards members, our rooms were on the concierge level, allowing us access to the lounge where we were able to dine on breakfast foods, drinks and snacks all day, and an early 'dinner' of luscious appetizers.  Amazing.  Upon arriving at the Marriott, after spending 10 days in Turkey and the island of Rhodes in regional hotels, it truly felt like walking into an oasis, a piece of America overseas.  Call us spoiled, but one cannot scoff at the myriad of plugs available for cell phone chargers, hair straighteners, and the like.  This had to be the most relaxing 5 days of the trip, though we toured every inch of the Athens sites. The concierge at the hotel gave us great advice about an outdoor Greek theatre where we were entertained by authentic Greek dancers, access to scuba diving, the notice about the changing of the guard at the capital (once per month) and access to the movie theatre two doors down. The pool on the roof with the full view of the Acropolis was fabulous and relaxing there after a full day left nothing more to be desired.  Thank you, Marriott, for making our trip one for our own personal history books.  You helped us save a tremendous amount of money by rewarding our loyalty to your chain throughout the years and we will remain, truly yours.

Thank you for posting.  I have spent the last 12 hours agonizing over trying to plan a high school graduation trip for our daughter/family.  Between the dilemma of timeshare vs hotel, it has been a struggle.  Was there enough to do in Athens for 7 days?  And, with the timeshare on Antiparos having 2 bedrooms, we contemplated that.  Any advice you have would greatly be appreciated.  Thank you so much!  Happy New Year.
