America's first officially named "American Viticultural Area" (AVA) - Augusta, MO, is ~ 45 min west of downtown (http://wine.appellationamerica.com/wine-review/89/America%E2%80%99s-first-appellation.html). Missouri was second only to New York in wine production before Prohibition. Sadly, many wineries were physically destroyed during Prohibition, and it took until the 1960s for the rebuilding to start. Learn more at "Missouri Wine" and "Bethlehem Winery" on local PBS station's http://www.ketc.org/productions/productions_livingSTL_videoArchive.asp).

Since then, the wineries have grown significantly in number and quality, consistently placing well in national and international events. See http://www.missouriwinecountry.com/ and others in the "Wineries" section of http://homepage.mac.com/vanvooren/St.%20Louis%20Favorites.html<</a>br />
The National Norton Festival (http://www.nortonfestival.com/), celebrating the America's True Grape, started in 2007 and plans to be an annual event.
