We will be in St. Thomas in August and were wondering if a car rental is essential. We will be staying at a Marriott property.

We have just returned from Marriott Vacation Club Frenchmans Cove -- had 2 relaxing weeks there.

Yes -- definitely need a rental car if you wish to do your own exploring and beach visits. The roads are relatively basic and often steep & hilly. We had a Jeep Wrangler from Hertz which was ideal. I Don't recommend a conventional car such as a Taurus. They use US left hand drive cars but drive on the left so that is something of a challenge for US people [we are from UK]  The Marriott properties are a 10 minute drive from the town -- but this can be very congested when cruise ships arrive.  Best beach Magens Bay, 20-30 minutes from Marriott.

Have a great time.  Fiona & Murray

If you have that much time in St. Thomas, 3 things are a must. Play Mahogany run golf course, above Meagans. Take trips over to St John on the ferry. The people are nicer and the beaches are better. GO TO YOST VAN **** and party on the beach. Absolutely the most beautiful beach you will find in the VI's.

Yes you will want a car. Be careful as most are not use to driving on the left and most roads are narrow with many blind stops. You will find the locals friendly but most works seem rude atleast that was our experience at Frenchmens Reef the Marriott next door seemed much nicer in terms of customer service and general attitude.

There are p l e n t y of taxis on the island so a car is not absolutely necessary. They are basically open air multi-seating style
