Weekend in Georgia

My relationship with Atlanta Marriotts goes back to the mid-seventies when I used to travel as a young whipper for Marriott itself, parking myself in the Atlanta Perimeter Center. Between my variety of business trips, baseball tournaments, vacations, film festivals and family visits, I have been to more Atlanta Marriott brand properties than anywhere else in the world, even my hometown Washington DC. Atlanta is where I often get lost, because I think I know where I'm going.

This trip took me to Buford, Ga. approximately one hour north of ATL for a visit with a cousin who is doing some fabulous work with an organization that provides a nurturing environment and loving home for children in need of guidance and a place to live.

Beautiful environment for youngsters that with its lovely 276 acres
and facilities could also pass as a top notch resort

Usually my hangout, even when visiting family, is at the Buford/Georgia Mall SpringHill Suites, a fine property (often with great rates during Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks), close to the Georgia Mall, which houses several nice restaurants, like one of the first Ted's (as in Turner) Montana Grill and is close to Coolray Field home, of the Atlanta Braves AAA team. The surrounding area and towns have several nice Main Streets with shops, restaurants, and theaters, making it easy to keep oneself busy. Lake Lanier is nearby for a great time during the summer and they have minor league hockey (lots of 'dropping of the gloves' in the minors) and they used to have Arena Football (high scoring games, good with a local craft beer ). We had an excellent lunch at Aqua Bistro in downtown Buford  and on Sunday we tried out Top Golf (as shown on Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel). Golf's approach to broaden the appeal of the sport. Huge holes, pretty good pub type food, and of course, some tasty brew. Here's a tip, if you slice, play the tees to the far left and of course if you hook, play the tees on the right side of the platform (it'll drive your true golfing pals crazy as you rack up points into the 10-15 yard wide holes!

One of the drawbacks of being so far north of course, is its distance from the airport, but turning lemons into lemonade, the 50 mile drive north made it easier to get to Athens Ga. home of the U of Ga. Bulldogs and that world renowned professor, world class gardener, Klingon linguist, and all around good guy, foxglove. That's right Insiders, I got to meet the man himself (second only to Herschel W. when it comes to street recognition among the citizens of Athens), along with Mrs. Foxglove at The Big Bread Cafe in Athens. Talk about your southern hospitality, Marriott could learn a few things about terrific welcomes from the Foxgloves, who rolled out the red carpet with U. of Ga. goodies, maps, and key info on the town of Athens, and as you can see from the photo, even a local Athens brew, Terrapin (delicious), yeah baby, great stuff and an overall wonderful time. PS - the breakfast was excellent as well.

Better even than collecting badges, I've had the great fortune of collecting Insider get togethers;

Hearing the tales of exotic travel from californian

Learning all of the best food spots from the island king himself Mr. and Mrs. kharada46

Having an enjoyable hangout with vaboywnder and Matt (whose real name is easier for me to remember)

and now a marvelous morning with the Foxgloves.

Next up, the Washington DC Insider get together with pluto77, bejacob and the head honcho herself, NathalieF

Insider camaraderie at its best. As the Gershwin boys wrote, " They (The Man) can't take that away from me".

Keep on keepin' on Insiders.

erc It was an absolute delight to meet and greet you and Mrs. Erc. We appreciate your taking the time to make a side trip to the Classic City, and you're welcome any time. Next time perhaps we can treat y'all to some of the plentiful night life that Athens offers. Thanks again.

foxglove, I hope you'll be available when I get down that way. Tentatively looking at April 2015. Although I've already "collected" Clarke county, I've got quite a few places just north of there still on my list of counties to visit. When the time gets closer, I'll let you know.

It looks like erc had a wonderful visit. I particularly like his "six-pack abs."

bejacob  Yeah, I knew from your map you'd already collected Clarke and surrounding counties, but definitely keep us informed as you firm-up your plans next year. April's a beautiful time of year for a visit 'round these parts. (There's a reason the Masters is held during April each year.) And there's plenty more Terrapin where erc's came from!

What a wonderful looking gang of Insiders to go along with a fun weekend and pictures.  Thank you so much for sharing these however; my guess is erc is a slicer while foxglove hits em long and straight!!!

Top Golf is surely a fun place to gather with a group of friends.

IAHFLYR  I wish that were so. I gave up golf and took up biking 'cause nine times out of ten off the tee, unless it was a dog-leg right, you could kiss that ball goodbye. And the bike paid for itself in less than a year since I no longer had to buy a dozen Titleists a week.

I generally find that people who look for golf balls in the woods/weeds, are there because their ball is one of those they hope to find.

That was my point, looking for their ball and coming home with more than they left with is what some call a great day of golf.

Great write up erc, love the 'double cannon" and remember I once blogged about it, as only the Americans with their unique innovative approach of the age  would actually go ahead and make such a device a la "the double barrelled shotgun is better than the single…. sooooooo, look what 'ave made Jebediah!"

brightlybob Well, it sounded good in theory.

Robert Toombs, a UGA alumnus, member of the U.S. Congress, and staunch secessionist known as "the Fire-eater," declared in many a speech before the war that the South had nothing to fear from the Yankees, stating, "We can whip 'em with cornstalks!" After the war, someone who'd heard those speeches called him on his statement: "Look here, Toombs, didn't you tell us that we could whip those Yankees with cornstalks?!" "Yes, I did," replied Toombs. "But damn 'em--they wouldn't fight us that way!"

      And so it goes.

you mention Lake Lanier.  There used to be a Marriott with a golf course there that was pretty decent...both the hotel and course.  Not sure what ever happened to that.  But glad you had a great trip.

Thanks, yeah, I remember that (we used to drag inner tubes behind boats, back in the day).

I'm pretty sure it was the Pine Isle Resort (no longer there, like you said) and it hosted the Bilderberg Conference once.

Bilderberg Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Breaking news - Marriott, with the best margins in the industry and setting another stock price record today is just about to report earnings - expected to be above expectations (Starwood reported strong results earlier and Marriott is expected to top Starwood and Hilton).  So, I guess we can expect more elite benefits now .

Keep on keepin' on Insiders, we're setting records .

Tubes behind boats, oh that brings back some long lost memories..so glad I sold the boat a few years ago as I'm far to old for that bone jarring blistering in the sun for hours and hours.

I see our Elite benefits growing leaps and bounds with Arne thanking all the Elites for putting Marriott on the top even if we are using other chains, VRBO, not traveling.....all while grabbing the new Elite benefit to be announced soon......FROZEN WAFFLES.

As I eliminate fun things that I used to be able to do (racquetball, volleyball, rock climbing, banging around at high speed behind a boat, even waterskiing, etc etc) I turn more and more to Insiders for ongoing ideas of lower impact activities (kayaking, biking, hiking, heights viewing, gondola riding, even strapped into a straitjacket zipriding, and of course eating and drinking  etc etc - although, not quite ready for badge collecting ).

I look forward to the short- and long-term solutions for blog access and exposure NathalieF Nathalie hinted at earlier this week. Pine Isle...that's it.  If you remember, back in the late 90s, Lake Lanier nearly went dry during the drought.  That may be what killed Pine Isle.
