New UK Marriott Rewards credit card on its way?

brightlybob Platinum 10 Reviews

I've recently received a survey from a company working upon Marriotts behalf. I have a thing about surveys, they can be a useful way to influence the route taken by a brand, or, alas it seems more frequently, a waste of my time. Consequently my approach to clicking on surveys is rather haphazard, and probably mean-spirited… I mostly don't bother.

But Im pleased I bothered this time, for as it turned out the survey concerned one of my pet peeves, the lack of a worthwhile UK Marriott credit card. Make no mistake, I carry the UK Marriott free credit card, the only one on offer. Its better than nothing, but not that much better. Our United Kingdom free card garners a 10,000 point signup bonus, the USA premium card, 70,000. The United Kingdom card awards 1 point per £ normal spend, 2 points per £ at Marriotts and double points on non-United Kingdom spending. The USA card, whilst costing $85(£50) is so much more rewarding.

The best means I can use to show the difference is comparing the points I actually received from my £30,000 ($45,000) credit card spending last year:

My UK credit card 45,000MR points

The USA credit card would on the same spending have awarded 150,000MR points

On top of that the USA card also awards night credit for every $3,000 spent (I'd have been credited 15 nights for that) and a free category 1-5 certificate every anniversary, against the United Kingdom card which awards only 2,000 additional MR points every anniversary.

It would seem that Marriott (or rather its credit card partner) are considering a United Kingdom premium card at the £5pcm region offering 5 from the following menu of benefits:

Free Annual Cat1-5 cert

10,000 points signup (eh, same as free card?)

Annual 5,000 anniversary points

Monthly points-boost

Instant MR Gold status for obtaining and retaining the card

2 points per £ spending

Double points at Marriott/supermarket/select partners

0% on transfers for 12 months, purchases for 6 months (eh, whats this doing on a loyalty card?)

Free travel insurance (excesses on the non-emergency cover mean credit card TI is pretty useless)

Free breakdown insurance (usually the most basic, those with new cars have it, those with older cars need more comprehensive cover)

24 hour foreign emergency assist (????)

Special reduced rate foreign exchange (yeah, right)

Special reduced rate car hire (yeah, right)

I can see the instant Gold status incurring the ire of some as it will be seen as increasing the numbers entitled to lounge access, although in all my stays at EU properties I've never come across an overcrowded lounge, although the Heathrow ones have been packed for the first hour of evening service on a few occasions.

The purpose of this post, apart from its newsworthiness is to make fellow United Kingdom Insiders aware that this survey is happening and if you receive an email from PCP Market Research (Peter Pickersgill) to respond, this really is a real opportunity to have a say on something that could greatly improve  our credit card offering here in the UK. Just to give readers an idea, if my 5 choices were accepted as the benefits I'd have received at least 95,000 points on my last years spending and the free night certificate!

Hey brightlybob.  As a fellow UK poor relation in the credit card stakes, I would really welcome this.  Who is likely to run it, do you know?

      Wotcha Tommo781

The survey gave no clue to the bank behind it all, but I'm going to surmise that its still Sygma, the one behind the free United Kingdom Marriott credit card for the following reasons:

      1. Although unknown in the United Kingdom, its a good sized French outfit

      2. Sygma handles a lot of French loyalty and scorecard accounts

      3. Sygma already does the UK Marriott card and is the obvious first port of call for a new product

And mostly because early in the survey it asks which travel-based loyalty schemes I'm a member of and the loyalty credit cards I hold. All the usual suspects were there, Hilton, IHG, Starwood, Avios, BAEC, Virgin, plus one virtual unknown… FlyBe. Yes, that famous worldwide airline and its equally famous frequent flyer scheme called, um, er... And of course its credit card. Well I've heard of FlyBe having flown a couple of domestic flights with them, but I was completely unaware it had a frequent flyer scheme, or indeed any frequent flyers, never mind that it could generate enough interest to justify a loyalty credit card, but it does, and its issued by… yep, you guessed it, Sygma!

And so for all those reasons, my stab-in-the-dark, completely inside-info-free guess, is Sygma!

Interesting brightlybob !  If it is Sygma, I wonder what they will do in regards to existing UK Marriott Credit card holders, such as you and I.

Yup, I've flown Flybe in the past.  Only from Norwich to Edinburgh though.  Like you I would never have thought of it having a loyalty scheme.

Nothing, I suspect, other than advertise it to us especially heavily!

I know that IHG has both a free and a premium credit card, and I must admit, the IHG premium card is of some interest with instant Platinum membership, 4 points per £ spent abroad, or at IHG hotels in UK and 2 points per £ everywhere else. At the moment Marriott is my main scheme, with IHG my back-up, but I have idly considered getting the IHG premium card and moving over my main business stays to IHG. Since I value IHG points at about £5 per 1,000 and Marriott points at about £8 per 1,000, it suggests that may be worthwhile against the current offering but probably not against the planned Marriott premium card.

Anyroad, with IHG you have the choice of either card, or both, so I'd imagine that's what would be offered to us, although I'd be happy to pay the fee and simply have my current Marriott credit card upgraded to the premium one, as long as the signup bonus was offered, of course

Your final paragraph brightlybob.  Couldn't agree with you more.  I'd certainly be up for that, as long as the monthly fee was reasonable.

Tommo781 the suggestion on the survey was £5 per month, with a monthly 400 bonus points. Seeing as it could offer that plus double the spending points of the standard card, it seems a bit of a no-brainer! If it goes heavy on the points and ignores the free travel insurance, free breakdown, cheaper car-hire/FX/online-shopping partner ****, it could really shine.

It seems that at the moment it's impossible to apply to the Marriott UK credit card.

Maybe they are working on a new one...

Very interesting. The last time that happened Marriott moved provider from the Halifax to Creation. It wasn't the smoothest move ever!

Sorry for the delayed response, I was on holiday when you posted this and didnt spot it, but no update here at all. It seemed to have faded away, but fistuk recent posting that the card is no longer available for applications suggests something new is happening, though I can't see why new applicants for the free card would be frozen just to bring in a premium version. So perhaps we in the UK are going to go through another gyration of Marriott credit card provider. Interesting...

It would be nice to know more from Marriott - at least to tell us that there is a plan. I am a long time Marriott CC user and would miss it if these signs were of a problem rather them seizing an opportunity. I took the survey and would be prepared to pay for benefits too.

I only applied for the Marriott credit card from creation around February this year.

To my disappointment the inept creation confirmed my card was delivered but nothing through the post.

I called them and everytime they said a new card was being posted out.

After about three failed deliveries, one advisor suggested I make a new application but declined as I sensed misuse of personal information, credit and financial information and was about to make a complaint to financial conduct authority as I considered this unacceptable.

Finally my card was delivered late April but no sooner had I activated than I started receiving late payment penalty notices.

Now, the online login has blocked me out twice.

To me all this represents a financially inept company, creation the runs the Marriott credit card.

I only wish Marriott contracts out a worthy financial institution.

what are other peoples experience with creation?

I obtained the Marriott Rewarda credit card from Creation shortly after launch and apart from a few early-days Marriott spends not receiving the double points (quickly resolved by a phone call) I've had no issues at all with Creation. A darn sight better than their previous provider, the "sonny-can-you-spare-£20Billion" Halifax!

That has been my experience. The points always need checking - but that seems to be a MR issue rather than Sygma, but although tiresome, the mistakes get sorted quickly. I would rather have this card than none. I only wish I could have the Chase Visa in the UK!

I've been trying to sign up for the Creation card since June/July and been getting the 'Application not available' message. When I contacted Marriott the response was that they had suspended all further applications and could not tell me why or when applications would open again. My hope is that this means a new and improved card is on the way, but they seem to be taking their time with it! Could do with the points to help my lifetime status along...!

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but it seems you've been mislead. I've called this number and was clearly told that it's impossible to order the card at the moment and not known when it'll be available again...

This whole discussion Is about the fact that the UK Marriott credit card is unavailable for enrollment online. Surely you could agree it's logical to realize it won't be available for ordering on the phone either...

Hey all!  We were able to gain better clarity around this from our team.  They have let us know the following:

We have spoken with our Partner Relations specialists, and it turns out that at this time, the UK Marriott Rewards Credit Card is not accepting any new applications.  We apologize for the confusion, this information has not yet been updated in our info databases.

The Partner Relations team found out about this on July 28, 2015, but the applications may have been shut down before then.  They are not accepting any new applications until further notice.  Unfortunately, we do not have any more information than that at this time.

        Dear Carat,

        Thanks for your reply.

Marriott is expanding very heavily in Europe. I dont make it up to the 50 nights per year for the Gold status but appreciate my current Gold status and would like to keep it.

The credit card (10 free status nights) would make this happen. Additional I also like to spend private vacation in the Marriott houses.

How can we push to get a credit card in Europe. I have an office in UK even if I am not resident in UK but I think this would be enough to get the credit card. To be honest you get credit cards on every corner (stores, gas stations, etc.) and for Marriott it is so difficult to make it happen?

How can we push to get in Europe a Marriott credit card?

A friend of mine who runs a travel blog has found out that Marriotts UK credit licence lapsed meaning it can't offer nor is it allowed to promote a UK credit card (the legacy Marriott card is OK as its run by Sygma Bank that does have a licence and not promoted by Marriott). Now initially Rob (yeah, I know, another Robert) and I surmised this was probably a blunder especially in view of the research that led to this thread, but that licence now lapsed over a year ago and hasn't been revived, so it may be that Marriott has decided to leave the UK Credit Card market. Now that's not as silly as it might sound following the EU directive cutting credit card interchange fees to 0.3%. It's hard to see where the money to award points will come from in future...
