Marriott to start charging for towels

I have been told my my local Marriott that they will be charging members and guests to use towels in the leisure club and spa.  This is apparently now "Marriott policy" which is the reason for the introduction.  Does anyone know if this is really being rolled out across the UK?

I've stayed at nearly every Marriott in the UK over the last few years and never been charged.  It seems a little bizarre to charge hotel guests and they can simply order extra towels to the room and use them, so it must be aimed at the paying leisure members.

(For each location tag, you will be guided through a 3-step process to add (1) a city and a state or a city and a country, (2) a Marriott brand, and (3) a Marriott hotel.)
