Why does Marriott put the term "Marquis" behind some of the hotel names? Does this term mean anything in particular? I've stayed at the Marriott Marquis in San Diego and have an upcoming reservation at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. As far as I can tell, the Marquis designation seems to mean "gigantic full-service hotel packed with tourists" - ha!
You're not too far from the truth. It's a brand extension of Marriott Hotels for larger properties (of course with magnificent distinguished service, they might shy away from the tourist description ). Similar to the differences of Platinum Premiers and Platinums and the Ask Arne and win points, it's somewhat of a mysterious idea that started with huge buzz and kind of faded out (although they are opening a Marriott Marquis in my DC hometown this year).
Here's a good Flyertalk discussion last year on that very subject and two relevant press releases;

And no, I'm not stalking you - by coincidence the two times I logged in today, were right after you posted your good questions.
