If you ever have to stay in the city, we highly recommend the Residence Inn located in Manhattan on Ave. of the Americas. The rooms are very clean, the staff nice, and the view is attractive (especially with the right room. If you plan and book far enough in advance you can get rates are reasonable ( 189.00 on 12/24/07) sometimes less. Last but not least, the hot buffet breakfast is tasty, has something for most, and will last you well after lunch.
P.S. The train (subway) is about a 1/2 block or so, away.
I agree, this is a very nice hotel. Centrally located, but a little bit away from the crowds of Times Square (which can be very hard to move through). The kitchen areas are very nice, in fact some of the nicest kitchens at a Residence Inn I've seen. The kitchen also, of course, allows self-catering, which can keep the cost down.
