Vegas on Points - Cosmo or JW?

I am seeing horrific reviews on both the Cosmopolitan and the JW.  Heading to Vegas for a girls weekend, but am using points to defray everyone's cost.  Which is truly worse?  We want the best pool, and these two properties seem to have the nicest pool areas.

Cosmo - rooms dirty, Platinum Elite meaningless in 2014, mold in spa, stains in carpets

JW - cigarette smoke everywhere, rooms in disrepair, poor customer service, no upgrades for Platinum Elite, resort not up to JW standards

Seems like I have to pick between the lesser of two evils

For whatever it's worth, I have had many, many, colleagues stay at the Cosmo and not one has ever said any other than very positive reviews.  I personally have eaten in the hotel and enjoyed some libations in a few of the lounges and I can give a personal 'high five' to those.  I know nothing of the JW.

    hope this helps,

We stayed at the JW in November for 5 nights (on points) and were very pleased overall.   Yes, there were some issues -- such as being in the "away" tower but that solved the smoke issue.   it could use an updating, but the rooms are large and the grounds are beautiful.   The location worked for us as we are golfers and like a less hectic atmosphere.    They supply a shuttle to the strip but times are limited    We took it when we wanted to shop or walk the strip but took our car in the evenings for dinners & shows.    The spa is ok but certainly not one of their greatest.    Their two evening restaurants Italian & Japanese were terrific. Service was so-so, but the casino was large & friendly.

Overall however, we would stay there again, so I guess that says it all.

    Sharwrkmom,

When are you going? I only ask, because the pool is seasonal at the JW. I believe it is closed from Nov.-midMarch. You should check, to make sure it will be open. It is beautiful, and the poolside service is fantastic. The spa is beautiful, and it has its own private pool which would be great for a girl's weekend, if you want some r&r. If you are using points, check to see if you can pay a little extra and get the HUGE presidential suite. It is fantastic, and would be wonderful for a place to get together...it has two bedrooms with king size beds, two luxurious bathrooms, with jacuzzis and rainfall showers, a huge bar, big table for 6 gorgeous, large living room, gorgeous balcony. It would be worth the price. My husband upgraded our family to it for my birthday a few years ago, and it was awesome! If you look at the photos of the hotel, these are the rooms on the ends of the buildings. They overlook the pool area. However, just be aware, that the JW is in Summerlin, so you will be in a suburb, not on the strip. They used to have a free shuttle service that will take you down to the strip, and then will bring you back, so you could always use that, if you are wanting a relaxing time away from the crowds, but still are up for a night or two out on the town.

I Have never stayed at the Cosmo, but if it is important to be on the strip, I would definitely recommend that.

A lot of Vegas pools are seasonal. I haven't been to the JW Marriott yet; the bad reviews have kept me away.  Ive stayed at The Cosmopolitan several times and it is one of the best hotels on The Strip: upscale and spacious rooms and many with balconies. You cannot expect the same elite treatment that you get at a Marriott though; otherwise, you will leave disappointed. I think this has started many members' stays off on the wrong foot, which has resulted in a lot of harsh / negative reviews.

Both Cosmo and JW are nice places.

The Cosmos is relatively new and JW is out of town which is not bad either. Since you are doing the Girl thing, I would recommend Cosmo if you want the non stop buzz of the town. If not, you can relax of strip at the JW.

As for the smoke and anything you can associate with it... this is Vegas. People smoke and drink almost everywhere so...

And your platinum membership... I joust got back from Houston at a Marriott and they could not of cared less about my membership or my colleagues. I think this one all depends on Hotel management. Some go the extra mile the others don't care.

Have a Great time!  The Cosmopolitan is a great hotel.  The only drawback I would forsee is potential noise from the Marquee night club which stays open till 4am on select days.  You may want to request a room as far away from that side of the hotel as possible.

We stayed at the JW, as the Cosmo was not open when we were out there.  The JW was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there.  Our room was amazing.  We were upgraded to a really nice suite (two restrooms, really wide crown molding) with a very large balcony overlooking the golf course.  Unfortunately, I am on a business trip and do not have access to my pictures.  The hotel was extremely clean and staff was wonderful.

I think the primary question I would ask....do you want to be on the strip?  If you don't care, then the JW is a very good option.  It has a wonderful spa and golf course.  The JW is about 10-15 mins from the strip.

We decided that our next trip, we will stay at the JW the entire time (we spent part of this prior trip in another hotel on the strip).
