In keeping with Community Manager's wish list discussion for 2013, I thought I would ask the same question of Insiders for 2014.
My personal wish list destinations for 2014 are:
Chepstow, Wales - St Pierre, A Marriott Hotel & Country Club
Bristol, England - Bristol Hotels | Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel
Seattle, WA - Seattle Waterfront Hotels | Seattle Marriott Waterfront
Washington DC - Key Bridge Marriott (and wow, $74/night as I type this)
Del Mar, CA - Marriott Del Mar CA Hotel San Diego
Carmel, CA - No Marriotts
Newport Coast, CA - Marriott's Newport Coast Villas, Newport Coast, CA
Honolulu, HI - Oahu Resorts | JW Marriott Ihilani Ko Olina Resort & Spa
Boston, MA - Hotels in Boston, MA | Boston Marriott Long Wharf Hotel (wow, Boston is expensive! )
Please tell us about yours.
Well since I never really did anything on my 2013 list - it still stands until I complete it. Problem is that good deals come up and I get side tracked. This year it was the transatlantic repositioning cruise from the med to the Caribbean. Had a great time returning to Rome and Spain, and seeing more of Portugal.
My 2013 Plan that I never completed so will keep as a 2014 target - on the outlook for a good South American repositioning cruise.
This is the year of South America for me, and who knows, maybe I will get lucky with a side jaunt to Antartica and earn World Traveler status like californian
Argentina - Buenos Aires - Marriott Plaza Hotel Buenos Aires
Brasil - Sao Paulo or Rio de Janiero - would love to see the Tango Festival in May where they dance Tango in the streets
Chile - Santiago - any of the 3 Marriott properties look great! Would love to do a cruise from Valpariso (250m from Santiago) to Buenos Aires and see more of the contienent
Peru - Lima - JW Marriott Hotel Lima
Iceland - unfortunately there is no Marriott so I will probably use one of the local hotels.
As many Insiders know, my ongoing goal is to visit every county in the U.S. and document my visit with a postcard mailed from the county seat. My collection stands at 795, and in 2014, I expect to push that above 1,000. With that in mind, my travels over the next 12 months will be focused domestically as I add to my tally. Here are the states I expect to visit in 2014.
Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia (covering the middle section of TN, northern AL, and the northwest corner of GA).
Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan (a visit to Minneapolis at the beginning of summer may allow me to collect the rest of the counties in WI and the last two in the U.P. while collecting several postcards from MN).
Speaking of Michigan, I plan to complete the lower peninsula as well sometime over the summer.
West Virginia, Maryland, and northern Virginia are on my radar for late in 2014. I'll fill in some gaps on my map.
As for my number five pick, I'm undecided right now. Possibilities include North Carolina, the southern half of Illinois, western New York, or almost anywhere west of the Mississippi. If all goes well, I'll cross off my top five and keep going.
No matter where I go, I'll be looking for Marriott properties along the way.
I'm not sure yet. I haven't been in Oklahoma since 1977, so I'm way past due for visit. Since I know I'll have a guide, I'll have to put Chickasha on my list sooner rather than later.
Since I don't have all my plans in place for 2014, I can't rule it out for the coming year, but it will likely be a bit farther in the future. I have so much ground to cover in the western U.S., that I almost need to include a trip west every year.
I hope you can get to SA this year. It sounds very exciting and I would love to read all about it.
You bring up a very good point regarding getting side tracked by good deals (a good problem). Along those lines, while I tend to be a way in advance planner, the problem with all that planning is that it doesn't leave any room for opportunities that just - pop up. I think there's a lot to be said for holding back a little, so that when an unexpected sale materializes, it can be taken advantage of.
I hope you will save a copy of your current map as it stands at the end of 2013. It would be fun to compare your current map with the map as it will look at the end of 2014, so we can actually visualize your progress. Best wishes for getting to all the counties that you hope to. It would indeed be gratifying to see some of the states that are almost completely colored, finally entirely colored in. Happy county collecting!
pluto77, yes I will save the year-end map. In fact, I have several maps showing my progress through the end of each year dating back to when I started. I'll put together a blog post showing my progress .
I'm glad you enjoy that, because I too, find it fun to see how the map fills in from year to year as I travel. Some folks think I'm a bit crazy, but I'm surprised at how many remember and ask me about my latest (or next) trip.
I also tend to be an advance planner, but have been trying to old back and leave myself open for the good deals. I have noticed alot of them occur in Nov and Dec before and after the holidays, so this year I saved a couple of weeks of vacation to be able to take advantage of it.
Very impressive and ambitious list, pluto. The only firm trip I have planned is to Marco Island's MVC property. Probably will schedule several trips to Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head Island. Definitely will spend some time at the Jacksonville Marriott off I95 and probably the Renaissance property on Lake Michigan, near Petosky, MI.
